Background: A Case of Food Poisoning
Twenty-two persons attended a brunch on Sunday, May 22, 1988 (11 a.m. to 3 p.m.) in Livonia,
New York. All fresh food items were delivered to the cooking area the morning of May 22. The
menu consisted of scrambled eggs, bacon, fruit salad, and pastries.
Scrambled eggs consisted of Grade A eggs from a Maryland farm. They were beaten, mixed with
milk, salt, pepper, and diced onions. The eggs were scrambled in small batches and served from
warming trays heated by alcohol burners that kept going out.
Bacon was purchased from a meat wholesaler. The bacon was fried on a large griddle and served
from warming trays.
Fruit salad was made from fresh apples, bananas, and oranges. They were cut up and mixed with
commercially canned peaches and pears.
Muffins and other pastries were purchased from a bakery and served with butter.
