Cumberlands Influence of Cloud Computing on Business Annotated Bibliography An annotated bibliography is a specialized list of journal articles, normally developed for a specific purpose. I’ve included links in this week’s content folder that supplement what I presented in this week’s lecture. For this week’s writing assignment, you’ll develop an annotated bibliography with at least 3 annotations (articles). Follow the same format for each of your annotations. I’ve provided a sample which you can use, but I think it would be helpful to add fields for the type of study (e.g. survey, case study, qualitative interview, text mining, etc), and theoretical basis. This is your annotated bibliography, not mine. This is a chance to use a class assignment to advance your dissertation work. Please keep that in mind and write this for yourself and your future use as a researcher, not something you’re turning in for a grade.Links-https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/general_writing/common_writing_assignments/annotated_bibliographies/index.htmlhttps://courses.lumenlearning.com/ivytech-engl112/chapter/the-purpose-of-an-annotated-bibliography-add-content-jpj/ Running head: ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY

Abstract
This annotated bibliography contains 45 journal articles that are of potential use to someone
writing about Enterprise Social Media (ESM) or the Enterprise Social Networks (ESN) created
for the purposes of collaboration in the corporate environment. The articles are mostly centered
on ways of replacing traditional platforms like email with more modern approaches like ESM.
Related issues such as records management are also addressed.

Useful Articles for Examining Enterprise Level Collaboration
Enterprise Information Systems frequently employ some sort of collaboration tool or
tools. Email has been the de facto standard for years, but it presents numerous problems both
regarding the user’s ability to manage their own data and the organizations ability to use emails
as a repository for corporate knowledge management. ESM has shown promise as a replacement
platform for email, while admittedly introducing its own limitations.

Barnes, N. D., & Barnes, F. R. (2009). Equipping your organization for the social networking
game. Information Management Journal, 43(6), 28-33.
Author’s Abstract
“The article focuses on the significance of online social networking for the utilization of
information services companies and organizations. It is stated that due to the ubiquitous attribute
of online social networking, it is critical for records and information management (RIM)
professionals to include it on their daily endeavors to help them boost their business. However,
despite the usefulness of online social networking to companies and organizations, there are two
risks for them to be avoided such as legal risks and operational risks. In conclusion, the authors
suggest that it is critical for organizations to do good business practices and good governance
principles in engaging to online social networking.”
Reviewer’s Abstract
Managing electronic content as official records has been difficult as organizations have moved
away from paper based systems. This article addresses several issues to be aware of regarding
the challenge of managing new social media objects as records.
Strengths
ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY
4
The authors include robust research sources in support of their assertions. Organization is very
good in highlighting the various concerns organizations face in managing these records. The
discussion of risk management is well formed and useful to organizations embracing this new
technology.
Weaknesses
The only obvious weakness is that the article was not published in a peer reviewed journal. It is
not particularly scholarly in its use of theory or original research. It is also a little dated, being
published in 2009. Policy and software has evolved since then, rendering some of the
recommendations potentially overcome by events.

Behrendt, S., Klier, J., Klier, M., & Richter, A. (2015). The impact of formal hierarchies on
enterprise social networking behavior. Paper presented at the Thirty Sixth International
Conference on Information Systems, Fort Worth, TX.
Author’s Abstract
“With more and more companies using enterprise social networks (ESN) for employee
communication and collaboration, the influence of ESN on organizational hierarchies has been
subject of countless discussions in practice-oriented media and first academic studies.
Conversely, the question whether and how formal organizational hierarchies influence ESN
usage behavior has not yet been addressed. Drawing on a rich data set comprising 2.5 years of
relationship building via direct messages, confirmed contact requests, and group messages, we
are able to show that formal hierarchies have an important impact on social networking behavior.
By applying means of social network analysis and supported by statements from interviews, we
illustrate how deeply formal hierarchy impacts the three examined types of relationships. Our

results motivate academics to further study the interrelation between hierarchy und ESN and
hierarchy’s effects regarding the sociotechnical design and implementation of related systems.”
Reviewer’s Abstract
This article is a very interesting case study where social media in a military organization was
studied within the context of network nodal analysis. The results were interesting, though not
particularly suprising, in describing how interaction was clustered based on a worker’s level in
the hierarchy.
Strengths
The scientific approach and robust use of network theory lends great credibility to the article. It
was published at a reputable peer reviewed conference, and included a very detailed reference
list. Since military organizations form a large potential user base for ESM, the results can be
applied in real world situations to encourage service men and women to incorporate these tools
in their daily work. The sample size and time span seemed quite large, certainly large enough to
justify the researchers’ findings.
Weaknesses
I could identify only a couple weaknesses with this study. The first would be the type of
organization, bascially a hospital, and how far the results could be extrapolated to other types of
organizations. Another weakness is in the implementation of ESM, and that it was an immature
tool set for the workers. The researchers admitted that familiarity and use of ESM seemed to
increase during the study period, potentially altering the results.

Author’s Abstract
“Purpose – This paper aims to examine the impact of social networking in the workplace and to
assess its use as an effective business tool. Design/methodology/approach – The paper examines
positive and negative perceptions of social networking in the workplace and provides a critical
review of literature in the area. The drivers of, and barriers to, change are explored, and whether
the reasons for some organisations prohibiting or restricting social networking in the workplace
are well?founded or corporate suicide. The link between social networking and organisational
culture is examined, looking at whether social networking tools are capable of revitalising and
reshaping the culture and brand of an organisation, which in turn can lead to better ways of
working and increased levels of employee productivity and satisfaction. Findings – The findings
indicate that the business advantages and benefits of social networking in the workplace are still
very much underappreciated and undervalued. Although some organisations across the world
have started to implement some of the facets of social networking technology and reap the
business benefits, fear, resistance and risk are the opinions that still dominate many
organisations. Originality/value – The value of social networking technology in the workplace is
yet to be determined. This paper addresses gaps in the current literature and demonstrates that the
business benefits of social networking far outweigh the negative perceptions that are still
predominant in the pre?millennial generations. The paper highlights that social networking
technology can facilitate improved workplace productivity by enhancing the communication and
collaboration of employees which aids knowledge transfer and consequently makes organisations
more agile. Moreover, social networking can provide enhanced levels of employee satisfaction
by reducing the social isolation of teleworkers and making them feel part of organisational
culture during long absences from the physical office.”

Reviewer’s Abstract
The article is an analysis and synthesis of existing literature that draws several conclusions. The
first is that social media is, for the time being, a virtually unavoidable aspect of corporate
collaboration. It’s shown too many benefits to be a passing fad.
Strengths
The article’s strengths are in its review of existing literature, searching for gaps, and the
informative structure of its historical analysis of ESM. The author provided a detailed reference
list and analysis of existing work. It was particularly useful as a literature review of the
formative work of the time, and how the then emerging field of ESN was changing the way
workers collaborate.
Weaknesses
If the article has any weaknesses, it is the lack of original research and its age. It doesn’t expand
the body of knowledge by collecting any new data, but pulls together other works to report on
the efficacy of ESM. Also, the gaps in the literature described would have to be analyzed in a
contemporary context to assure that they have not been filled by subsequent work.

Author’s Abstract
“Enterprise Content Management (ECM) systems are a class of information systems that manage
digital content and enable work and collaboration from a distance. The study of ECM is a
relative new discipline with limited published research available in the field. A review of

literature showed that the topic of ECM implementation has received little attention. The goal of
the qualitative study was to reveal the processes of successful ECM implementations with crossfunctional teams. The method was grounded theory and the instrument for data collection was
telephone interviews with semi-structured interview questions. The population consisted of
stakeholders of or contributors to ECM implementation projects. The type of firms was midsized
or large companies with multiple locations and headquarters in the United States. The sample
size was 15 participants. A combination of leveraging professional networks and referrals
identified study participants. The data analysis took place via the three stages of coding open
coding, axial coding, and selective coding. The study revealed a set of processes with five
categories and 17 subcategories with broad overlap across different ECM system
implementations in different organizations in different industries. A theoretical model emerged
that includes an eco-system of participative leadership with a high degree of communication
enabling a virtuous cycle of activities: creation of a shared vision, followed by concurrent
execution of standard project management best practices and a change management effort,
followed by incremental delivery. The study’s findings may help ECM practitioners answer
questions about how to implement ECM systems with cross-functional teams successfully.”
Reviewer’s Abstract
This dissertation reports the results of a study looking at ECM in cross-functional (sometimes
referred to as matrixed) teams. ECM has an important relationship to ESM. ESM stores the
artifacts of collaboration within an organization, so managing those artifacts along with other
important related content is essential to a coherent enterprise data management strategy.
Strengths
ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY
9
The work’s strengths are inherent in the fact that it’s an approved dissertation that used
qualitative data to expand the body of knowledge regarding ECM implementations. Another
strength is in the way the author explored organizational structure and the factors that contributed
to successful implementation.
Weaknesses
Enumerating weaknesses for this dissertation is difficult. For the purposes of this annotated
bibliography, the only weakness I can identify is that it provided no specific information
regarding ESM as content to be managed. It did, however, acknowledge that ESM is a content
area that must be addressed in any ECM implementation, making is useful for my purposes.

Author’s Abstract
“Building on its successful implementation of an e-mail management program, the company
featured in this case study turned to holistic e-records management. From its inception, the
project’s fast pace drove its success. In the first 90 days, the team established the records
inventory, records policies and procedures, records retention schedule, and folder structures.
During the next 90 days, the team outlined the project structure and deliverables for all the
company’s e-records, including e-mail and file shares. But the project began with the company’s
motivation to make changes.”

Reviewer’s Abstract
This article provides relevant commentary and background material regarding the importance of
records management within an Enterprise Information System. It would be best used as
background material to support an introduction to current problems in corporate collaboration,
rather than a reference of original research. Relevance = 3
Strengths
The article contains useful information from a practitioner standpoint. It includes useful
lessons learned and recommendations. The relevance is very high when analyzing ESM,
because records managers still struggle with the challenges of all electronics records
management. The varying technical architectures and pace of change in ESM platforms presents
a particular records management challenge.
Weaknesses
While useful, the article is not at all scholarly. Its weakness is in its nature; it is a case
study, a success story, versus any sort of research. It wasn’t published in a scholarly journal.
Articles like this provide good background material and often lead the reader toward
organizations and conferences that often do contain more scholarly material that would be more
appropriate for use in a dissertation.

media: establishing social networks and accessing digital content; and the two impacts these
capabilities have on organizations—employee performance and user behavior. The article
identifies the implications for managers as they consider the design decisions for an enterprise
social media platform.”
Reviewer’s Abstract
This article addresses social media implementation in the corporate environment. It focuses its
content on 2 main points: 1) the ability of employees to form social networks, and 2) the ability
to retrieve corporate data. Its main theme is to relate factors for managers to consider when
designing or deciding on a source for a social media platform. Relevance = 5
Strengths
Credibility is strong, considering the publication this article comes from. It is also very
relevant to my area of interest because of the examination of data retrieval. This relates to the
problem I’ve related about email being somewhat of a black hole for information. How data
might be more easily accessed via social media would be an important point to prove.
Weaknesses
While the article was published in a scholarly journal, it is somewhat anecdotal. It didn’t
include any new research or knowledge on the topic. However, it does include several
references that sound potentially useful.

Author’s Abstract

“The introduction of IT-enabled collaborative tools such as Enterprise Social Media (ESM) has
brought new forms of organizational collaboration to the forefront. We introduce social fabric as
a theoretical frame to reveal how ESM can become part-and-parcel of the social environment in
which organizational members interact and collaborate. Drawing on Bruno Latour’s cartography
of controversies, we present novel empirical insights from a case study of the ESM platform
Yammer in an IT consultancy company. Our analysis uncovers four threads of the social fabric:
‘public-private context’, ‘social-professional content’, ‘praise-reprimands giving ratio’ and
‘noise-news perception’ that characterize the interactions between the organizational members
and how collaboration is woven on the respective ESM platform. The findings show that
delineating the emerging threads of the social fabric can help tracing the progress of different
collaborative initiatives on ESM platforms and anticipating their success.”
Reviewer’s Abstract
The authors explore ESM as it relates to sociological theory. The study was conducted using
actual data from a well knows software solution which has been purchased by Microsoft for use
as it’s premier ESM component in an already successful collaboration platform, SharePoint.
Several interesting controversies regarding this ESM usage are enumerated which could be
juxtiposed with other works on barriers to ESM implementation.
Strengths
The article’s strengths are in its research design and theoretical foundation. The researchers used
actual data and analyzed that communication data in great depth to analyze it against the various
sociological constructs used in the study. The article provides a particularly valuable assessment
of the literature regarding the nature of collaboration on ESM.
Weaknesses
ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY
13
I can’t identify any weakness, per say, in this article. Its foundation is rooted in an appropriate
use of existing scholarly literature, and it extends the body of knowledge by analyzing actual
real-world data to illuminate several trends found within a robust corporate ESM
implementation.
Annotation # 8

12-15.
Author’s Abstract
“The article focuses on the growth of the enterprise social networks (ESNs) in the workplace.
Topics discussed include the forecast by market research firm IDC about the growth rate of the
enterprise social software category until 2015, the value provided by ESNs to the business, and
the innovation in using internal social media.”
Reviewer’s Abstract
This article addresses the importance of and barriers to implementation of ESM solutions, using
several surveys by major research organizations as supporting material. The overall conclusion
is that the software often exceeds an organization’s ability to absorb the cultural change
necessary to fully appreciate the value of ESM, but as social media in general becomes a larger
part of individual worker’s lives, these barriers will gradually disappear.
Strengths
The strengths of this article are in its applicability to my topic of analyzing ESM for group
collaboration in a corporate environment. It provides valuable insight using nationally
recognized research polls. The barriers to ESM implementation, like any new technology, are an
important factor to recognize while conducting research in this area.
