Whether networking in person or via the Internet, it is critical to use networking for your career success. By networking, or establishing a connection with other professionals in your field, you widen your realm of career possibilities. Through others, you may hear about a possible job or be referred to someone who is looking for potential employees. Networking while on the job between various colleagues, can in turn increase your knowledge base. It allows you to share information that can help your development and increase the likelihood that someone might consider you for open positions as they become available.

Problem Solving: Review the problem-solving steps.

Review the problem-solving steps:

Define the problem — analyze it
Prioritize the resolution: What is most immediately needed and which is secondary?
Brainstorm possible solutions based on priorities
Come to a mutually agreed upon solution
Put the resolution into operation
Evaluate the results

Problem Solving: Notice that when you look at step 2, you are prioritizing a solution. Especially in a customer service context or a personal emergency, you need to determine what the most urgent need is and address that first.

Example Scenario Applying Problem-Solving Steps:

A child has fallen off his bicycle in your driveway and hurt the bridge of his nose. He is bleeding profusely. First, you determine he will need stitches as he is losing a lot of blood. So the problem-solving steps are:

Step 1: The child fell and is bleeding profusely but does not need an ambulance, just stitches.

Step 2: Priority: You need to stop the bleeding by applying ice while calming the child. The mother must be called. Then you need to get the child to the emergency ward as soon as possible. You tell your eldest daughter to call the neighbor to come over right away while guiding the child to the refrigerator grabbing a dish towel and ice for his nose.

Step 3: You discuss transportation to the emergency ward with the mother once she arrives, and who will stay with the children at home, as you move towards your car guiding the hurt child with his mother. You both consider various ideas and (Step 4) decide to call the neighbor to stay with the other children and you will drive since the mother is upset. As the neighbor across the street enters your front door, you proceed to the emergency ward (Step 5).
