Although more content may need to be found. Most of this is writing personal thoughts on this topic and historical context. Multimedia Presentation Guidelines
In this project you will create a multimedia presentation that explores both major developments in
historical inquiry and the value of examining history. This assessment addresses the following course
outcomes:
Investigate major developments in the progression of historical inquiry for informing critical
questions related to historical narrative
Articulate the value of examining historical events for their impact on contemporary issues
Prompt
Now that you have done some research with primary and secondary sources (using sources
from the library guide for your chosen topic) and written an introduction for a possible history
paper, you will turn your attention to thinking about the creation and value of historical inquiry.
You will use the research you have done throughout this course, as well as course materials, to
inform your thoughts. To present your opinions and observations, you will create a multimedia
presentation that addresses the following critical elements. While these questions may seem
big, remember that you are addressing them in a presentation, not a paper, and can use bullet
points, visuals, or other methods. These critical elements will be evaluated from the information
you provide in your multimedia presentation.
*Specifically, the following critical elements must be addressed:
I. Articulate how different historical lenses impact how people perceive an historical event. The lenses
include political, economic, and social.
1. Explain how historical lenses could be applied to your topic. For instance, are there aspects of
this event that might interest a political historian and what are they?
2. Choose one of the lenses referenced above, and detail how the historical narrative you started
in your research and introduction might change through this lens. For instance, how might the
story of your event change when studied through its political aspects?
3. Discuss what conclusions you can draw about the telling of history in relation to the teller.
How does this impact for you what history is?
Be sure to back up your opinions with information learned throughout the course and in reference to
your chosen topic. on your conclusions, articulate the value of studying history.
II. Based
A. Describe how you could apply to our lives today what you have learned from the event you have
studied. Be sure to reference specific contemporary issues. For instance, what specific issues that we
encounter today could benefit from lessons learned from your event?
2. Discuss your opinion of the adage that history repeats itself. Do you agree or disagree? Be
sure to explain why you have this opinion with information you have learned throughout the
course and in your research of your topic.
3. Discuss your obligation as a citizen of your society to understanding the history behind issues
that impact you every day. For instance, what civic duties you can be better at if you know more
about their history? How can being a more informed member of society benefit you and
society?

Apartheid in South Africa
My research will focus on the specific leaders
and political parties that spearheaded the
anti-apartheid movements
The National Party established the Apartheid regime in South
Africa, which lasted from 1948 to 1994 (Dubow, 2014, p. 1). The
administration sought to dispossess the blacks of their
political, economic, and social rights. Due to the atrocities
committed by the white minority to the majority black, the
latter created several movements to campaign for the end of
the racial segregation (Dubow, 2014, p. 8). Nationalists such as
Nelson Mandela headed these political parties such as ANC

Economic Lens
Social lens focusses on issues of marriage, alienation and
general suffering of the blacks.
The economic lens looks into poor working conditions and
underpaying jobs that Africans accessed.

apartheid policies, the Natives Land Act was

legalization of later segregationist policies.
The 1913 act formed the grounds for
adopting other policies to dispossess land
from the African people and segregate
against the coloreds and the Indians later.
Also, the Great Depression and World War
II, escalated the economic problems in South
Africa, necessitating the strengthening of the
segregationist policies.
When the National Party rose to power in
1948, it passed laws that sought to oppress the
African Majority. These laws began with the
passing of the Prohibition of Mixed
Marriages Act in 1949 (Norval, 1996, p. 125).
The act illegalized marriages between the
whites and other races. Further, through the
Group Areas Act, the government established
different residential places for the various
races. There was also the passing of the
Natives (Abolition of Passes and Coordination of Documents) Act, which
required all blacks to carry identification
cards at all times (Norval, 1996, p. 124). It is
these oppressive laws that necessitated the
rise of the anti-apartheid movements such as
the African National Congress. Mahatma
Gandhis non-violent strategies inspired the
movement. Due to the ban on all political
associations, the ANC formed a military wing
headed by Nelson Mandela. Upon the arrest
of Mandela, the anti-apartheid movements
were led by individuals like Oliver Tambo.
Lens 2: Social Lens
The social context of apartheid was
characterized by the forced settlement of
blacks in the specified areas (homelands),
leading to uneven growth of the population.
Due to congestion in these settlements, there

was intense suffering and exploitation of the
people as they had to offer cheap labor to
other races. They also faced food shortages
and had to undergo poor quality education.
Therefore, the blacks were prohibited from
accessing social amenities designated for the
whites. And so, the white minority enjoyed
the best facilities while the blacks lived in
deplorable conditions.
Lens 3: Economic lens
The apartheid regime considered the blacks
as a source of cheap labor and therefore did
not have rights. Thus black workers were
barred from accessing benefits related to
unemployment and sickness. Further, those
who worked in mines in harsh conditions,
where they were susceptible to fatal
accidents. In the mines, there were no safety
measures to protect the workers.
Economic lens
The black workers were also denied their
rights such as forming trade unions. They,
therefore, lacked a forum for championing
their rights. Their predicament could also not
be highlighted by the press because it was
banned.

The knowledge that I have gained in this

understand that I can utilize different
perspectives such as social, economic, and
political approaches when analyzing
historical events. Further, I can relate past

My Opinion
Does History Repeat Itself?
Evidence From the Course
History is vital in developing critical thinking
skills, necessary in analyzing historical
events. Thus, the subject enables us to
appreciate the developments of human beings
in the past. The value of history can also be
understood through the various lenses
I think history repeats itself because there are
many example and events to prove this claim.
Thus, some historical events, as well as
economic and political patterns, often recur
because they have been triggered by people
who have similar mindsets with those in the
past. For instance, I believe that economic
recession may occur again if people make
some mistakes. Therefore, since human
actions often shape history, there are high
chances of it reoccurring.
Though in rare circumstances, history does
repeat itself. Nonetheless, it does not have to
be in the exact sequence as in the past. For
instance, though apartheid may have ended
years ago, the superiority of some races or
groups is still evident in todays society. Thus,
the world has witnessed discrimination of the
African Americans in the United States,
Christians in Islamic countries and so on.
These events occur because they are always
performed by human beings, who may want
to assert their dominance in society.
Therefore, they may not be a repeat of
History is valuable, mainly when focusing on the three lenses

apartheid, but it will occur under a
different name.
Are Citizens Obligated to
Know History?
It is essential for citizens to know history as it
helps them identify possible connections
between the past, present, and future events.
It also enables them to appreciate efforts by
specific individuals, who championed for
some freedoms and rights. For instance, in
the case of South Africa, citizens need to
understand the history of the country, events
leading to the apartheid regime, atrocities
committed to the natives, anti-apartheid
movements and the role of influential
individuals such as Nelson Mandela, Walter
Sisulu, Desmond Tutu and so on. Upon
understanding history, citizens will feel
compelled to avoid totalitarian governments
that are likely to infringe on the rights of the
citizens.
