Course Concepts:
Introduction to the Dissertation Process
The dissertation process is continuous, and iterations of written work need to be developed through Committee feedback and candidate revision. Dissertation students will progress at different paces so communicating with your Chair to develop the components of each chapter as noted in the assignments is vital to your success. You may need more time to develop sections of your dissertation, or you may be able to submit sections earlier in the course. Work with your Chair to understand what is required for your weekly submissions to keep you on track for the completion of the final course deliverable(s).
The weekly overviews in this course are designed to provide you with insights into how you might construct the various components required for your Chapter 1; however, you will work closely with your Chair to determine what work should be submitted each week for review or evaluation. You should be focused on moving forward and should be working on some aspect of your dissertation at all times – even while you are waiting for feedback from your Chair or Committee Members.
Course Sequence
The dissertation sequence of courses has been designed to assist you in scaffolding the development of the individual chapters of the dissertation in a timely and scholarly approach. There are four 12-week courses. The deliverables evaluated at the end of each course include:
Dissertation course DIS-9901A – Chapter 1
Dissertation course DIS-9902A – Chapter 2 and Chapter 3; Final Dissertation Proposal
Dissertation course DIS-9903A – IRB approval, data collection, and Final Study Closure Form
Dissertation course DIS-9904A – Chapter 4 and Chapter 5; Final Dissertation Manuscript and Oral Defense
If you do not meet the minimum standards on the required deliverable at the end of the 12-week course, you will be assigned to an 8-week supplementary course. The 8-week supplementary course provides additional Committee collaboration and support, University support, and a higher ‘hands-on’ process to assist you through the areas that still need to be addressed to meet the minimum standards for each deliverable. These supplementary courses also allow for you to continue to work on subsequent Chapters and deliverables in advance of starting the next 12-week course once the minimum standards have been met on the current course requirements.
Committee Roles
Your Dissertation Chair and Committee Members are intimately acquainted with the dissertation journey because they were once where you are: excited and anxious to work on the final academic project of their doctoral studies. They will help you navigate the nuances of a doctoral dissertation. They are invested in you; therefore, the feedback they provide will be designed to guide you to finish your dissertation successfully. The Committee is as follows:
Chair – The Chair will be with you in each of your Dissertation Courses and will guide you toward completion, serving as a mentor and consult. Your Chair is available to you via phone calls, Skype conversations, and emails.
Subject Matter Expert (SME) – The SME will review work that you submit (at least twice per course). The SME will use the rubric to evaluate your work and will provide feedback to assist you on your journey.
Academic Reader (AR) – The Academic Reader will review your Dissertation Proposal (DP) and Dissertation Manuscript (DM) when submitted. The AR will use the rubric to evaluate your work and will provide feedback to assist you on your journey.
The goal of the dissertation sequence of courses is to keep progressing weekly on chapter components and to continue to make progress on the completion of your Dissertation Proposal as your Chair and Committee continue to provide feedback. The Dissertation Proposal must be complete and approved by the end of the DIS-9902X sequence of courses. You progress through your proposal by completing Chapter 1 and begin to work on the additional chapters of the proposal throughout DIS-9901X sequence of courses.
Course Requirements
An approved Chapter 1 is required to complete this course. Chapter 1 is the foundation of your entire study and introduces your research topic. You will spend a considerable amount of time developing and refining your statement of the problem in this course because this is the heart of your study. You will need to identify tangible evidence that illustrates that the problem exists and then identify why this problem must be studied. For an applied degree, the problem should be based on practice, and for a PhD the investigation of the problem needs to add to the body of knowledge.
The literature you present in Chapter 1 should focus on presenting background information on the problem and should build the case using evidence to prove the merits of researching the topic. Describe and frame the problem with a theoretical/conceptual framework and develop the research questions for the study.
The required components (and approximate length guidelines) of Chapter 1 include:
Chapter Submission Instructions
You will need to submit to the Doctoral Record at least two times in this course. You must submit to the Doctoral Record no later than weeks 5 and 9 for Committee review. Your Committee will review your work in the Doctoral Record using the Chapter 1 rubric. Your Committee will provide feedback in the Doctoral Record.
Access your Doctoral Record in NCUOne. You can access the Doctoral Record through the link in your course navigation bar or through the course drop down menu at the top of the page.
For detailed guides on how to navigate the Doctoral Record, access the resources in the Dissertation Center (link in course navigation bar).
Being Successful in the Course
Success in the course is determined by your ability to meet the course deliverable. In the DIS-9901 (A/B/C/D) course sequence, the required deliverable is a “Meets Expectations” on the Chapter 1 rubric in the Doctoral Record.
If you are unable to meet the course deliverable, but make the appropriate submissions to the Doctoral Record you will receive a C in the course:
If you meet the course deliverable, you will receive an A or B in the course.
Course Format
While you work on your draft of Chapter 1, your course will focus on topics we believe you will find helpful on your dissertation path. Feel free to read ahead and browse resources so that you might find the tools you need.
Things to consider each week:
Week 1: Getting Started
Congratulations on becoming a doctoral candidate! You have reached the point where you get to focus on the content, problems, and research that means the most to you and fuels your own passions. In Week 1 of 9901A, we want you to get your bearings on what is needed to be prepared to undertake in the next 12 weeks. Remember that the goal for completing the 9901x sequence is a completed and approved Chapter 1. While this can be done in 12 weeks, it often takes longer. In addition to this 12-week course, you will have three opportunities to take an 8-week supplemental course to help scaffold and support you with this goal. To prep you for this journey, we believe it is important to always look ahead to prepare yourself for what is next.
Time Management
As you begin your dissertation courses at NCU, take a minute now to map out your approach to completing your dissertation. Your dissertation courses have very specific deliverables to be met, so it is important that you determine strategies to assist you in meeting them. Anyone who has navigated the dissertation process successfully will tell you it is intense. You will work with your selected topic for two years or more, and there will be times when you grow tired of it. There will be numerous times when you are asked to revise and resubmit. Remember, your Dissertation Chair and Committee are there to help, not hinder, your efforts to develop the best possible dissertation.
As you focus on your final goals, completing your dissertation and receiving your doctorate, it is also important for you to take time for yourself. While you may find yourself spending long hours researching and writing, you should have strategies in place that will help motivate you to overcome hurdles you encounter.
