Be sure to develop and support your responses with specific examples and quotes from the rhetorical texts. Please type up your response to these questions in the form of essay (use complete sentences) for each question. Be sure to respond to explicitly to each part of the question. Your responses are due at the beginning of the in-class exam:

each question should be a paragraph long and just answer the questions as they are asked and answer every part of the question. I have provided some lecture notes for you if they are not enough your probably going to have to look them up. if you have any questions please dont hesitate to ask.

1. Compare and Contrast the arguments presented by Tecumseh and Pushmataha. A.) Be sure to identify their major claim/thesis and B.) Explain how each rhetor developed and supported (i.e. their rhetorical appeals and strategies) their claim. C.) Who do you believe gave the better speech and explain why?

2. Both Douglass and Stewart seek to refute the dominant cultural assumptions about African Americans through their rhetorical performances. A.) Identify at least three of the commonly held 19th Century assumptions about African Americans (as represented in the arguments of Thomas Dew), and then B.) Discuss how both Douglass and Stewart seek to challenge these assumptions through their rhetorical action.

3. Early Women’s Rights advocates faced several cultural assumptions about the proper place and roles for women. Select two texts from our readings on the women’s rights movement and explain: A.) What each advocate identifies as the primary source of women’s oppression in the culture and the reasons for focusing on this issue, B.) How each advocate seeks to challenge and address the problem identified, C.) Which rhetorical response you believe to be the most persuasive challenge to that cultural source of women’s oppression and why.

4. In class we discussed several perspectives of 19th and 20th century labor advocates. Select two texts from our readings on labor rights and identify: A.) How the advocate defines the problem with the labor current situation, B.) Who/what the advocate identifies as the source of the problem, and C.) How the problem is to be solved (what course of action needs to be taken to correct the problems.
