The Public Authority for Electricity and Water (PAEW) operates number of water pumping stations
at different locations in the Sultanate of Oman. Most important sources of water are from
desalination plants in Barka, Muscat and Sohar where they desalinate the water at desalination
plant and then pump this water to ground tank of Pumping Stations. The stored water in these
ground tanks is then pumped to the upper reservoir by centrifugal pumps and then water will
distribute to consumers from upper reservoir by gravity. In this process, frequently the company
faces the problems of shutdown of these centrifugal pumps for various reasons and disturbance
continues supply of drinking water to citizens. The photographic views of three centrifugal pumps
and motors assembly which is used at Al Khodh water pumping station for pumping drinking water
to Muscat city is shown in Figure A. The centrifugal pump is connected through flange coupling
to motor, both aligned in vertical direction.
The company wants to investigate the causes for the failure of these Centrifugal and pump
assembly. Hence, you are required to:
(i).
Investigate the possible failure modes in the centrifugal pump and motor assembly
considering both mechanical and electrical elements with proper justification.
(ii). Suggest the remedial actions to reduce frequent shutdown of centrifugal pumps and motor
assembly.
(iii). Discuss the possible ways of accelerometer mounting direction to acquire accurate
vibration signals with proper justification.

Task B: (20%)
A predictive maintenance engineer of Muscat Energy company has conducted a vibration
monitoring in the turbine-generator single reduction gear which is attached in the energy
distribution mechanism as shown in Figure B. The pinion(small gear) is located at the turbine
side, and the gear ratio is 0.8. The specifications of bearing located at the turbine side is provided
in Table B2, and specifications of pinion-gear set is given in Table B3. After the conduct of
vibration monitoring, the overall vibration reading, and the spectral analysis or FFT results have
shown concern to the predictive maintenance engineer. A number of frequencies are peaking in
the FFT spectrum. Table B1 shows the following frequencies that are peaking excessively at high
level.
(i) Identify each of the peaking frequency, and its associated fault;
(ii) Critically evaluate the condition of the bearing, and provide a neat sketch of the FFT spectrum;
(iii) Determine the gear mesh frequency, first and second harmonics with sidebands;
(iv) Discuss and sketch possible FFT spectrum that shows gear tooth damage if there is a gear
tooth damage.
(v) Discuss the different criteria in determining bearing, and gear faults.

different steps starting by the collection of the inputs (measurements) from the machine and then
the data processing and analysis.
