Clinical Psychology at the Doctoral Degree than at the Masters level Assignment | Get Paper Help

I am interested in help to answer one admission question for a clinical doctoral degree in Psychology. It is basically is asking why woud someone wants to study PsyD (Doctoral level) instead of Masters degree. The Question to be answered is: “Many people decide to study clinical psychology as a career because “they like to help people”. Beyond wanting to help others, please describe your reasons for pursuing a career as a clinical psychologist. Specifically, indicate why you would like training at the doctoral level rather than at the master’s level”

I became initially interested in Psychology in high school when I moved back to the United States. I always knew that I wanted to work with people. Learning about people’s background and what happened to them is very important in order to understand their back stories and perspective.  During my high school years, I became very intrigued about how human think and what triggers some behaviors especially with my curious personality. I was also amazed by the culture that accepts humans as they are and tries to approximate people in a culturally sensitive manner. I was selected to be an international student tutor by my high school teachers as they believed I could help bridge the gap of thoughts among some different cultures in the English language earners class. During that class, I also learned a lot about how people think and why they behave the way they do! I also learned that it is not only a cultural or a language difference between people, it is more of differences of how our brain work! The more I knew about this subject, the more I loved becoming a Psychologist.

Moving into College was another eye-opener, and a chance for me to grow and comprehend more of what psychology is about and how studying this field will enable me to become a better person. I was fortunate to work with many wonderful students as a resident assistant at one of the dormitories during my sophomore year. In this role, I got to learn about my residents’ problems varying from family problems, suicide, eating disorders, addiction, and trauma specifically sexual abuse and assault. I have enjoyed this role and I wanted it for a little bot more than a free room and meals in the campus dining hall. I wanted to help others as I felt connection to people, to students who sometimes come to the resident assistant as a first responder in the dorm. Having to go through some of the experiences, I’ve always questioned if all resident assistants should have some form of mental health counselling or crisis intervention to be able to respond properly to some problems that arise in the middle of the night. I am aware they cannot diagnose but having such training will enable them to recognize problems that need further intervention for the safety and the well-being of the residents in the dormitory. I felt as much as I helped the residents, they helped me grow and mature as a person. They made me love what I will be doing in the future. They contributed to my self-affirmation that dealing with people and trying to help them even by simply listening to them is what I would like to do in my future career. One of the milestones I developed during this job is the open-mindedness, especially when it comes to conflicts. It was amazing to learn how the same question or scenario can have different points of view and different answers. This caused me to self-assess my abilities to be able to be culturally sensitive at the individuals, groups and communities. I will forever be thankful for the opportunities provided to me by the University of Iowa faculty and students. I have learned how to become a better person and help people in more effective ways.

My interest in pursuing a higher education in Psychology was intensified when I worked as a research assistant in three psychology labs. I worked with Dr. Molly Nikolas on two different projects involving psychopathology, mental health, and social media use. The first project was about alexithymia specifically. The second project was tailored more toward the effect of social media on our mental health. I also had the opportunity to work with Dr. Ryan Lalumiere in assessing the effect of heroin or cocaine on rats’ brains. YOU NEED TO INSERT MORE DETAILS ABOUT THESE THREE RESERAH EXPEREINCES, WHAT THEY ARE AND HOW THEY CONTRIBUTED TO YOUR UNDERSTANDING OF THE FIELD. I strongly believe that psychology career is best performed when we apply the scientific knowledge to deliver evidence-based service to individuals, groups, and communities. Although the research I did involved research carried out on animals, but I can see how it increases the understanding of how brain functions and ho it could get impaired. The research experience allowed me to work with professors and graduate students in the field of psychology where I learnt a lot about the ethical performance of research, the points of performing such research. It was also an opportunity to grow as a young scientist by experiencing the importance of being meticulous, curious, punctual, and unbiased when it comes to observations. I was amazed by the standard of animal care in these studies and how working with these creatures requires a high level of responsible feeling toward all other living organisms.

I am thrilled to get the chance to build on the knowledge that I acquired during college, the experience I had as a resident assistant and as a research assistant and move to the next level of study. I am ready for the sophisticated knowledge and training that will help me apply this knowledge in clinical settings. My future goal is to become a highly effective advanced clinical psychologist who is able and capable of helping people through delivering evidence-based care and service. I believe my passion for psychology as well as the knowledge I gained during college and self-education will allow me to pursue the terminal degree in clinical Psychology, the PsyD program. I like the Doctor of Psychology Degree (PsyD) as it will equip me with the sophisticated clinical competencies to become the competent clinician who is able to help people based on evidence. I am also looking for the program that I feel is the best-fit for my ambition and the one that I can contribute to during my years of study and become a great ambassador for such a program throughout my career. I am mainly interested in schools that offer the scientist practitioner model of training, as this contributes to the most clinical training. I am very confident that I will contribute well to your prestigious program if I a given the chance to.

Thank you
