Corrections Research Paper and Evaluation
Probation, rehabilitation, jails, prison, and parole all make-up and contribute to the
criminal justice and correction system. Those who have acted outside of social norms and have
committed a crime will then be entered into the correction system to punish and deter them and
others from committing any future crime(s). Sentencing and punishment will be based on the
crime committed. Jail time is usually 12 months or less, while prison time is usually 12 months
and more. Our paper will discuss different trend pertaining to the past, present and future when it
comes to the development and operations of corrections; as well as how administration and
correctional organization affect and reflects services and financial demands. Furthermore, we
will analyze functions of management, control, technology, and security when in a prison
environment. Lastly, discuss educational programs and the use of treatment to help aid in
rehabilitation of individuals both in a intuitional and community correction setting.
Evaluate past, present, and future trends pertaining to the development and operation of
institutional and community-based corrections.
Community correction can be described as services or sanctions that are sent in place for
individuals (adults and juveniles). These services take place outside of the prison and jails. Such
sanctions are operated and enforced by the courts who hold legal authority power over the adult
or juvenile. Community correction programs involve parole, probation rehabilitation and
correction officers. Non-violent, and first-time offenders are many of the time typically offered
probation over jail or prison time. These offenders are under supervision and must live by
guidelines laid out by the courts and their probation officer. By establishing policies and
changing current ones in place, this aids to future trends in community-based correction helping
3
to improve the supervision of offenders. In the evet the offender suffers from mental illness,
some agencies have put in place specialized facilities to help give these offenders the distinctive
treatment they need and deserve. Both the criminal justice system and prison system can be seen
as a revolving door for offenders. In order to decrease the number of repeat offenders, before
release offenders should be provided with training on job skills, be afforded counseling and the
basic educational foundation to set them up for success. Moreover, elder offenders who are
released back into the community will require more attention. These offenders will need more
guidance and patience adjusting back into society re-integrating back to working a normal job
and other daily activities.
Examine correctional organization and administration functions that reflect operations
and fiscal demands.
Correctional organizations have responsibilities that reach far beyond their walls. They
are an integral part of the criminal justice system. As stated by Paoline and Lambert (2012),
“Jails are a critical part of the several interrelated components of our United States criminal
justice system” (pg. 180). Correctional facilities are also unique in how they operate, how they
are being managed, and the work environment personnel are forced to work. It is important for
correctional facilities to foster an environment that produces job satisfaction, low stress, and a
feeling that the organization is committed to being successful (Paoline & Lambert, 2012). The
organization must have clear procedures and goals for personnel to feel they have a purpose, and
to ensure everyone is working towards the same objective. Managers should get personnel
involved in process and decision making to give them a voice in the organization. Relevant job
training for personnel also helps to achieve better job satisfaction and work performance.
Personnel directly involved with contacting inmates must feel they have control over their
4
actions, and the actions of the inmate, for the employee to feel less stress on the job (Paoline &
Lambert, 2012). Correctional facility administration must ensure they support appropriate
training for their personnel and empower their personnel to have a voice in the organization.
Funding for correctional facilities is always challenging when populations are increasing, and
funding is sometimes decreasing. Correctional facility administrators should reach out to their
personnel to seek out innovative solutions to these fiscal challenges, and they should also never
stop looking for alternate methods to save money or be more proficient.
Assess the Security, technology, management and control functions within correctional
environments.
The need for security is paramount in Correctional environments, and this is achieved by
enhancing both the physical security and the personnel in security. The physical security majorly
focuses on the design of the correctional center and achieve the purpose of inmates to remain in
and be kept completely out of society. High perimeter walls, fences, alarms, close circuit
televisions, and detection systems are of great importance in achieving maximum security in
correctional environments. Correctional systems trained personnel are responsible for what
cannot be completed by the physical security, this includes assessing the inmates and their
belongings and monitoring movement in out of prison and also the transportation of inmates.
Extensive education is provided to correctional systems staff to enhance maximum security. The
physical aspect, which is the design of the correctional environment and staff, depends on each
other to achieve the needed protection.
Technology is both an advantage and a hindrance in correctional systems. On the right side,
data is to keep in touch with the progress of the inmates and monitor their improvement; that is,
if there is any. According to Popova, with the advancement in technology, the use of computers,
5
facial recognition, drones, and body cameras maintains security in the correctional systems
making it a plus in the overall operation of these centers (2011). On the other hand, this can be
tampered with and result in a great chaotic state in the correctional environment, which is a
threat. Management in the corrections differs in a variety of ways based on the correctional
facility. The staff tend to vary; this is because inmates in different jails tend to behave
differently.
Management in a specific correction facility may not be applicable in a separate facility
since it is messy due to the differences. In the case of management, educated personnel is most
effective after a thorough study of the inmates over a while and the state of the correction system
environment. When considering different factors, appropriate management is easily identified.
Explain the various educational and treatment programs used in rehabilitation efforts for
institutional and community corrections.
When it comes to rehabilitation efforts, the criminal justice systems utilized treatment
and programs to prepare and improve offenders outlook on their current and future situations.
The purpose of rehabilitation is to reduce the risk of recidivism and enhance their behavior. The
treatment and programs give offenders an opportunity to addresses their issues and improve their
life once released. In order to provide offenders with a greater chance of success, the programs
that are utilized in the prison institutions and found in the community as well to ensure
rehabilitations efforts can continue.
“Prisons offer a variety of programs in education, vocational training, recreation, religion,
substance abuse, mental health, work, and a variety of other self-improvement modalities,”
(Seiter, 2014, p. 409). During a prison incarceration, an offender has the chance to finish high
school, take college courses, or participate in vocational training. This education opportunity
6
enlightens offenders to be able to complete something and find employment within their
occupational skill set. By prisons encouraging offenders to participate in different educational
and treatment programs while incarcerated gives offenders a way to accept challenges and aim
for accomplishments.
Being released from an institution, offenders will be supervised through community
corrections. Community corrections will provide offenders with many resources and services to
ease their reentry to the community and reduce their issues they will face such as mental health,
unemployment, housing, substance abuse, and support systems. Probation and parole officers
will place ex-offenders in halfway houses, sex offender programs, substance abuse treatment
facilities, self-help groups, and other types of treatment programs to make certain the offender is
living a fruitful and crime free lifestyle.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the increased institutional and community corrections practices in the
nations significantly transform the lives of offenders. It is because most of the sanctions help in
controlling and regulating one’s behavior. Therefore, the government must increase its concern
on the institutions and increase the levels of training. Doing so will result in developing solid
citizens of benefit to the nation. Finally, the probation and parole agencies should keep focused
on ensuring that all programs take place under their control.
