Assignment instructions from Course Lecturer: (if any)
a) If the steps and solutions found to be identical way for two students, both will be awarded ‘0’ for
that particular question. So students are advised not to discuss with other students.
b) Students are requested to write the answers with all small steps involved in those
questions/problems/derivations.
c) Wherever required use suitable diagram.
d) Any missing data can be suitably assumed.

PART – 1 (12 marks)
1. Check the Dimensional consistency of Hagen Poisellue’s equation.
(2 marks)
2. Draw the velocity profile of the fluid flowing through the pipe and explain it with the
boundary conditions.
(2 marks)
3. Convert 200 gm/cm.sec to poise
(2 marks)
4. Analytical expressions are not available for certain type of flows. Mention that type of
flow. How those flow phenomena is being expressed?
(2 marks)
5. Difference in pressure in pipe at two points A and B was measured using a differential
manometer. The specific gravity of oil in the pipe is 0.85. If the difference in the mercury
level in the two limbs is 200 mm. Calculate the pressure difference.
(4 marks)
PART – 2 (3 x5 = 15 marks)
6. Derive the energy balance equation for the following case where the fluid flowing from
station 1 to station2. Assume no energy given to or taken out of the system. Any other
assumptions can be suitably made.
7. A capillary tube of circular cross section is 50 mm long and 2.25 mm bore. The head
required to produce a flow rate of 12mm3/s is 23 cm. The fluid specific gravity is 0.9.
Calculate the dynamic viscosity in centipoise and kinematic viscosity in mm2/s of the oil.
8. Derive Hagen Poisellue’s equation with all the small steps involved in it. Explain it with a
help of a diagram.
PART – 3 (1 x 8 = 8 marks)
9. Consider two cylindrical columns are being employed for absorption phenomena.
First Column is with packing and second column without packing. Which one is
preferred to effectively carryout the absorption phenomena. Explain why? What are the
challenges in fluid mechanics perspective in the preferred column operation?
