CE 440 Geotechnical Engineering
Design Project I: Slope Stability
Part 1: Get familiar with slope stability analysis software, Slide 2018, developed by Rocscience located on all
lab computers in Shelby Hall. Once Slide is open, click OPEN, then Tutorials to familiarize yourself with the
program. Analyze the slope problem that we did in class using the Ordinary Method of Slices (Fellenius
Method). Compare the result of this slip surface with the Ordinary Method of Slices Factor of Safety from
Example 13.3 in the textbook. Also, determine the lowest FS for this slope using the software.
A 30 foot tall, 1.5:1 slope is to be built. The soil is homogeneous, with c = 400 lb/ft2 and ? = 29°.
Part 2: Add a surface surcharge load of 2500 lbs/ft2 located at the top edge of the slope extending 25 feet
along the horizontal surface (distributed load).
a. Analyze the slope again using the OMS Method (Determine this slip surface and the lowest FS).
Determine if there are stability issues presented. If so, discuss possible stabilization techniques that
could be implemented if there was a major 4 lane highway running at the toe of the slope
(Unloading is not an option).
b. Provide a detailed comparison of the forces the software calculates of slice #6 before and after the
surcharge load is installed. Explain why some forces are similar and others have changed.
Part 3: Find a slope somewhere in the Gulf Coast region and take a few pictures to show the breadth of the
slope dimensions. Identify all structures or hazards that might be effected by instability of the slope. Make
sure you show the location of the slope, using a mapping service in the report. (5 bonus points if there is a
visible failure along the slope. Use your engineering judgement to speculate on the cause and a potential
correction.)
Deliverables: A short report with the results and any appropriate software images to justify your answers.
The report should have a summary of the results that answers any questions asked, as well as any
observations or solutions that might help the situation, if necessary.
