For this week’s discussion, we are discussing the importance of e- and m- commerce within the healthcare field. Electronic commerce, e-commerce, are any business related activities that occur online. This includes: “…distribution, buying, selling, marketing, and servicing of products or ser- vices” (Stair & Reynolds, 2018, p. 298). Similarly, mobile commerce, m-commerce is using any mobile device to conduct business electronically. E- and M- commerce are being used everyday in organizations, especially in healthcare.

In healthcare, e-commerce is important as it allows healthcare organizations the opportunity to grow in conducting business. It improves operations and reduces transaction costs, while improving the quality of care to patients. The most frequent use of e- and m- commerce are used for co-payments and other medical balances. Many hospitals, clinics, and offices use online systems to make payments. Additionally, e-commerce can also be used to pay for products and services needed for healthcare. Some examples include: gauze, thermometer, nitrile deposable gloves, wipes, and more that are frequently used. Another thing e-commerce is used for is purchasing health insurance. Many people evaluate which health insurance plan is best for them online and register there. Lastly, healthcare organizations use e-commerce to advertise for their company. Some people can purchase advertisements, invest in banners, or brochures to advertise for the company. Overall, e- and m- commerce systems help add value and growth to healthcare organizations.

The main component of a e-commerce structure are its electronic payment systems. They rely on “…user identification and encryption to safeguard business transactions” (Stair & Reynolds, 2018, p.329). The more ways a website or system has ways to pay, the more customers it attracts. The electronic payment systems needed to perform these different functions are credit card, charge card, debit card, and smart card.

E-commerce and mobile commerce take the levels of innovation in health care to a new level in which it isaccessibleto anyone at anytime in the world. E-commerce is important inhealth care because it provides patients and potential customers with an instant access to what a provider may provide or evenonlinedoctors appointments. M-commerce is critical in the health care field because it provides a means of communication among hospital staff and patients through a secure messagingapplication. E-commerce and m-commerce affect payments in a way where it is easy to do wire transfers, debit card purchases, or ACH payments to the provider. The m-commerce provides patients with a platform in which they can securely make payments over a mobile device through their website. The e-commerce allows customer to have access to billinginformation about their visits and to give an in-depth overview ofwhattheir charges were. In conclusion, e-commerce and m-commerce make the transactions between provider and patient very easy to attain.
