Capella University Mental Health in Panola County in Mississippi Paper & PPT Proposing an Approach and Assessment in Community Collaboration
Drawing on your previous assignments, your final project will demonstrate your understanding of the context and purpose of the task force, will propose an approach and assessment of the community collaboration, will present rationale and reflection of your recommendations, and will demonstrate communication skills. You are to consider yourself as the leader of the task force and an employee of the organization based on the Unit 4 assignment. You are to use the community identified in the assignment in Unit 2 and the social problem identified in the discussion in Unit 5. Your audience is the task force comprised of stakeholders from the assignment in Unit 7.
Your final project will consist of three pieces:
An overview of the initiative (1000–1250 words) plus title page and references.
An appendix of communications with the task force.
A PowerPoint presentation to introduce the stakeholders to the new initiative, potential approaches, and evaluation methods. Use slide notes to indicate what you would say during the presentation.
Initiative Overview: This section of your paper is 1000–1250 words plus references that provide an overview of the task force, your organization as lead, the community and its social problem, historical issues, and diversity in stakeholders.
Based on the current community problem that has been identified, you are to consider different community outreach approaches to address the issue. While you may present several options to the task force, you need to determine which ones are most appropriate and, specifically, which one is the best fit. As you recognize that the task force is going to be held accountable for its work, you also need to propose assessment approaches that would pair with the community outreach approaches you propose. In addition, you will need to support recommendations with theory, models, and scholarly literature. The paper will be a scholarly reflection presenting your rationale for your choices in approach, in assessment, and in communication.
Appendix of Communications: This is a collection of exemplars on how you as the task force leader communicate with potential stakeholders and, specifically, task force members. Each item in the appendix should come with its own face sheet describing the type of communication, its purpose, its audience, and the rationale for this medium of communication. Literature is recommended to strengthen your choice of content and medium.
As a good practice, a leader would e-mail the task force an agenda, handouts, and PowerPoint slides as note pages with narrative prior to the meeting. These documents will be your appendix for the paper.
A PowerPoint Presentation With Speaker Notes: This is a presentation that would be given to the stakeholders to introduce the new initiative, potential approaches, and evaluation. Utilize the slide notes to present your narrative to accompany the slides and strengthen the demonstration of integrating the literature through in-text citations.
As the task force leader, you are to provide structure and direction for the newly developed initiative. To lead this task force, you will need to orient the group to the purpose and context of the task force as well as provide options and recommendations for proceeding with this interagency community collaboration.
PROJECT REQUIREMENTS
To achieve a successful project experience and outcome, you are expected to meet the following requirements:
Written communication: Written communication is free of errors that detract from the overall message.
Number of references: Minimum of eight scholarly references from appropriate periodicals, newspapers, and journals.
APA formatting: The paper must be completed using APA (6th edition) style and formatting.
Paper length: Your paper should be 8–10 pages, not including the title page and references.
Paper format: Break your paper into sections for each of these areas:
An overview of the initiative (1000–1250 words) plus title page and references.
An appendix of communications with the task force.
PowerPoint Presentation: Your presentation should be 10–12 slides long and include title and reference slides. It should be visually engaging, and include slide notes showing what you would say during the presentation. APA style need not be followed except for references.

The community in which I live has many needed services such as alcohol and drug
addiction, but mental health is something that caught my attention while obtaining my bachelor’s
degree in social work. Living in Mississippi which is one to the poorest states and holds the
number one slot for things such as obesity, unemployment, and poverty, And with
unemployment leads to lack of insurance. This led to individual who need mental health care
along with their families left in the dark. In Lafayette county there are approximately 53,796
(2016) individuals and a fourth of these individuals who are faced with mental health issues
along with alcohol and drug addiction also within my city, there is the University of Mississippi
which effects the growth of this county yearly. Individuals complete their degrees and decide to
make Mississippi their home.
The past six years I have worked in the mental health field and saw firsthand how the
lack of knowledge and insurance limits the care needed. Mental health in the African American
families is a taboo topic and shielded and the word mental health does not exist. The family
members who has this affliction will not receive the necessities needed to survive such as
medication and regular doctor visit due to shame from others in the community.
Mental illness
just as other disease does not discriminate, mental illness affects a diverse community. Since I
live near a university, I have met individual from different counties, ethnicities and cultures.
Some of these individuals I have met while shopping a Walmart are some of the same individual
I have conducted a assessment for them to receive mental health services.
As the community goes, so has the resources. In 1971 The Haven House opens it doors
with only 15 beds, which offered treatment for those facing issues with mental illness and drug
abuse. This facility offered 30 to 90 treatment. In the first year it provided services to 90
individuals. In 2001 the facility expanded and now has 48 beds that provide services for male
and female patient, due to the expansion it provides care for a least 300 people yearly
(Communicare, 2020).
Another facility that provides care to those with mental illness is Region IV Mental Health
Stabilization Center. Which began providing services in 1972. Region IV provides services to
individuals in need of mental health and alcohol and drug abuse at facilities in Alcorn, Desoto,
Prentiss, Tippah, and Tishomingo Counties in the state of Mississippi. The Stabilization Center
is a 15-bed facility that provide care for those with or without insurance. The treatment last from
3 days to 90 days (Mental, 2020). The last resource is affiliated with The Haven House, which
is Communicare a community mental health center that offers a variety of outpatient clinical
services, including:
•
•
•
•
•
Childcare Services
Prevention Services
Crisis Services
Behavioral Services
Substance Abuse Services
Each of the listed facility are affiliated with the Department of Mental Health Hospital
located in Jackson, MS. , Tupelo, MS and Meridian, MS. These facilities provide more intense
treatment than the facilities listed.
Racial tension has the most historical impact in this community. Lafayette county and
Ole Miss has been the center of racial tension since James Meredith walked on the University of
Mississippi campus.in 1962. Upon his arrival riots started which was encouraged by the
Governor at that time Ross Barnett. Due to the growing threat to James Meredith along with
other African American president Kennedy orders 31, 000National guardsman’s to provide
safety for him as well as others in the community. With the South Jim Crow laws and the
tension with the Plessy vs. Ferguson along with the Brown verdit racism was taking its peak.
The death of Medgar Evers also impacted the growing racism and the death of Emmett Till.
These are some of the historic events that effected the African American community and why to
will not educate themselves due to the impending repercussions.
The listed website provides needed information for those who know where to search,
again if individual is not education of the services offered they lack the knowledge of were to
search.
As a human service provider/leader my goal; educating those in the African American
communities along with latinos, Asians any other ethnicity located within the community. My
goal is providing information by providing workshop, seminars, and women groups. I would
meet people where they are to provide the information . I would also establish a temporary
housing center for those individuals whose family has gave up on them due to repetitive actions.
The reason behind the seminars; provide families the importance of medication regulation and
why its important to learn what mental illness consist of and how a person can receive the
treatment they deserve. As a human being.

COMMUNITY WORK

My study in social work has enabled me to appreciate why some organizations commit
themselves to improve the quality of life for the populations living in our society. Before the
great depression of the 1930s, religious groups and voluntary organizations were the only groups
concerned with relief efforts to the community. Presently, the federal government has taken
various initiatives in social welfare independently and in collaboration with private
organizations. In the recent decade, our nation has been boggled by alternating periods of
prosperity and economic crisis, leaving many individuals and families exposed. There is a need
to ensure that people are economically empowered through the provision of jobs, access to
quality healthcare as well as children and family welfare (Brody & Nair, 2013). Many
community-based organizations thrive on the provision of support to vulnerable groups in the
society together with philanthropic partners and the government.
As a student worker, I have had a chance to work in some of these initiatives, working and
living within the community of vulnerable families in providing resources, creating healthy
relationships, and building strong communities. I have personally taken a keen interest in
Alliance for Strong Families and Communities after working with one of its CBOs in a network
of over 400 other organizations involved in the provision of human services. As a professional
human service organization, the body has firmly committed to agitation for social justice as well
as interventions in the provision of safety nets for vulnerable members of the society. In my little
stint at Alliance, I worked in an array of programs dealing with civic engagement and advocacy,
adoption and foster care, canceling, education programs as well as workforce development. All
these initiatives amongst others were aligned to the organization’s mission of creating a healthy
and equitable society where adults, children, or whole families can achieve their full potential.
Indeed, as a human service leader, I would fit in the Alliance network working with its strategic

alliances in helping families overcome barriers and helping them achieve their full potential
(Alliance, 2020).
Its legacy in the human-serving sector extends for over 100 years, where it initially
operated as the National Association of Societies for Organizing Charity. Since the 1900s, its
primary focus has been the family unit where the organization could share information, propose
standard operational procedures with other parties as a way of offering relief to underprivileged
families. However, the organization later reassessed their goals in 1946 following the
introduction of social welfare programs by the federal government (Alliance, 2020). Thus in
avoiding the duplication of the relief programs by the government, the organization under the
name Family Service America focused more on preventing the breakdown or the disorganization
of the family unit.
Nevertheless, the organization grew to become a recognized voice in social service
attracting like-minded organizations in collaborating to offer community-based human services.
As its network grew, the organization doubled its capacity to serve. As a way to achieve longlasting impacts in its initiatives, the organization realized that it could only attain this by
strengthening individuals and communities. Together with its associates, the organization now
operates as Alliance for Strong Families and Communities. Supporting children within healthy
families is now their primary concern, as it’s the only way to build strong communities
(Alliance, 2020). Today, the Alliance network has helped millions of adults, children, and
families access equal opportunity in educational success, economic opportunity, social safety,
and health.
COMMUNITY WORK
4
Future operations in human services are bound to have many interruptions (Brody & Nair,
2013). Thus in light of these developments, Alliance has resulted in working closely with its
associates in the network to device ways through which they can overcome challenges and take
advantage of developing opportunities. Such initiatives will be geared towards making Alliance a
high impact non-profit organization with long-lasting impacts in changing the lives of people and
communities. Thus in a unanimous vote by the board of directors in 2015, Alliance decided to
involve all the network members in its intensive planning and vision process dubbed Alliance for
the future. The process would involve a task force of different group members and board
members where the deliberations would be tabled in an Annual Alliance National Conference.
A close look at the organization’s website, Alliance engages in many outreach programs in
civic engagement and advocacy, adoption and foster care, counseling, education, and health. One
prominent program is its partnership for health outcomes in partnership with the Robert Wood
Johnson Foundation. The foundation has continually supported the collaboration with various
CBOs in the Alliance network that partner with healthcare institutions in serving disadvantaged
members of the society. Therefore, in my future endeavor in social work, I would love to work
with one of the partners in the organization’s strategic action network whether direct service
organizations, state associations, or affiliate members, Alliance for Strong Families and
Communities would offer a chance in contributing positively to communities’ quality of life.

STAKEHOLDERS AND MENTAL HEALTH
Social Problems Background
As an ardent student in social work, I’m able to appreciate the need to improve the
quality of life for the disadvantaged members of our community. I have been privileged to be
part of initiatives by community-based organizations as well as other government agencies. I
reside in Sardis, a small town located in Panola County in Mississippi State, which is one of the
poorest states in America. My engagement in social work has involved living and working
within this community. Many residents are in dire need of humanitarian assistance, and this
includes those living around the Sardis community. My community often experiences several
challenges, like increased crime rates, drug and substance abuse, low living standards, and
mental issues. From the 2010 census results, the community had about 1700 residents, and most
people cannot access health insurance due to high levels of unemployment. People live entirely
in deplorable conditions around my community, with child neglect cases on the rise. Also, the
low economic and social environments significantly contribute to the mental problems among
the people. According to WHO (2003), mental well-being is interconnected with the physical
and social functioning and health outcomes of the people. Since getting health services in this
community is challenging, individuals who graduate from Mississippi University volunteer by
offering mental health services after clearing their studies. Thus there is a need to adequately
address mental health awareness among Black people, Latinos, and other small ethnic groups
living in my community.
Underlying Issues
1. Stigma against Mental Issues
2
STAKEHOLDERS AND MENTAL HEALTH
3
With many years in social work, I get to understand the difficulties experienced by
individuals in acquiring mental health services, especially those without health cover insurance.
The Mississippi States has a significant number of black people who view the mental problem as
a taboo and would not want to discuss it openly. Most of the mental health patients rely on their
families for emotional and social support without any professional help or medication. Like any
other illness, no one should stigmatize mental health patients. There is a need to expand
awareness programs to end the stigma associated with mental problems. According to the World
Health Organization (2003), the resistance of society to accept that mental health problems affect
families, which means that there is limited support for people suffering from mental issues. Since
I stay near Mississippi University, I have interacted with people from different ethnic
backgrounds while walking on the streets or shopping in some of the Malls around. I have
provided my professional help in mental assessment on some of the individuals and
recommended cognitive assistant.
2. Minority Discrimination
Over the years, African Americans, Latinos, and other small ethnic groups have
encountered racial discrimination, which impacts negatively on their psychological health. The
effects of racial discrimination, especially on Black individuals, got widely documented,
according to Pieterse et al. (2012), and it is clear that it exacts a psychological toll on African
Americans. The discrimination against African Americans has portrayed them as inferior
individuals who do not deserve access to quality healthcare, education, and other public services.
The outcome of racial discrimination has led to the majority of Blacks in Mississippi failing to
acquire quality education. As such, they cannot get quality jobs; hence they end up living in

impoverished conditions. Low living standards and continued discrimination have negatively
impacted on the psychological health of the Black people in Mississippi.
Existing Mental Health Facilities and Other Stakeholders
Several facilities have come up to offer inpatient and outpatient treatment for people
suffering from mental issues in Mississippi. According to the Mississippi Department of Mental
Health, some of the common mental health facilities include; Region 4 Mental Health Services,
Lifecore health group, and Regional 1 Mental Health Center. Apart from mental health services,
the centres also provide elderly services, crisis services, Alcohol and drug services, adult
services, child and youth services. East Mississippi State Hospital is another well-established
mental health facility within the State. The facility got accredited by joint the commission and
offered mental health services to a group of people across the State (Mental, 2020). Other
stakeholders in mental health include policymakers such as the government’s ministry of health,
donors, and well-wishers as well as the media. Civil Society organizations such as FBOs, CBOs,
and NGOs also play a role in supporting mental health in the community. Recovering mental
health victims, the community, health practitioners like nurses, physicians, psychologists, and
community health workers additionally make up the list of critical stakeholders.
A Collaborative Initiative
After completing my bachelor’ Degree in community service, I want to establish a mental
health program that will help the community. As a human service provider leader, my objective
is to increase mental awareness among Black people, Latinos, and other small ethnic groups
living in my community (Pieterse et al., 2012). I intend to organize workshops, seminars, and
women groups where people will get information about mental issues and how to seek medical
STAKEHOLDERS AND MENTAL HEALTH

assistance. My objective is to visit individuals in their residential places within the community
and provide mental health information directly to them. I also plan to establish a temporary home
where homeless individuals would find shelter. The workshops and women seminars are
intended to offer crucial information on mental health medication as well as signs and symptoms
related to mental problems. As the leader of the initiative, I plan to recruit and bring onboard
several stakeholders who will assist me in executing this program.
The stakeholders will provide a support system in terms of treatment, finances,
coordination, and making of policies. As a leader, I will engage various stakeholders for the
smooth kick-off and running of the program. Engaging stakeholders will be aimed at boosting
and facilitating decision-making, creating an environment of understanding that involves the
affected community and other stakeholders (Dundee, 2014). The ministry of health, as one of the
stakeholders, formulates policies concerning healthcare. Their crucial role will be to guide how
we execute the program concerning the country’s healthcare policies. Health care workers will
provide treatment and medication to mental health victims through prescriptions and counselling.
The activities involved in carrying out the program will need money. Therefore, reaching out to
donors and well-wishers will ensure that seminars and workshops get carried out most
effectively and that the temporary homes get built for homeless patients. The work of the media
will be to promote the program through advertisement, and the community will offer support
through encouraging family members to come for help. Some of the non-governmental
organizations in Mississippi include; Mississippi centre for Non-Profits, Catholic Charities Inc.,
the Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi, Make a Wish Foundation, Out of the Dark Inc., and the
American Red Cross. Reaching out to these experienced organizations will provide resourceful
advice and insights on how to manage community programs.

Summary
A collaborative initiative will be the most appropriate approach to addressing the mental
health problem. Many individuals are in dire need of help due to the many challenges like mental
health, drug abuse, and child neglect. These problems are caused by underlying issues that have
been affecting the community. For instance, there has always been a stigma against mental health
issues. The Mississippi States has a significant number of black people who view the mental
problem as a taboo and would not want to discuss it openly. Many victims are left to rely on
families for emotional support without any professional help or medication. Besides, a majority
