FORENSIC PSYCHOLOGY
Psychology is the study of the study of human mind and behavior, including the
conscious and unconscious concept and human feelings and thoughts (Bartol, 2017). Psychology
is a massive field and it has a large number of subfields. For my research, my subfield of choice
is forensic psychology. Forensic Psychology is the intersection between psychology, law, and the
criminal justice system. This subfield of psychology involves understanding the legal principles,
for them to effectively and efficiently interact with the judges, the attorneys, the victims and the
legal professionals (Gavin, 2018). The major role of forensic psychologists is to screen or assess
prisoners, they are responsible for assessing the psychological disorders among the criminals and
the defendants in the criminal courts in addition to examining the mental state of the criminals in
order to establish whether they can stand trial (Winerman, 2004). Professions in this field work
in prisons and jails, rehabilitation centers, law firms, police departments and law agencies.
I chose this field in regards to my own personal aspirations of becoming a criminal
profiler, which falls under forensic psychology. A criminal profiler consults with local police or
other law enforcement agencies on major cases to develop a psychological profile of a suspect,
based on the evidence available (Winerman, 2004). These profiles are used to link a suspect to
multiple crimes, like serial rapists and murderers. The profile also may be used to predict the
identified offender’s future actions. In this paper, I will research on the importance of psychology
in the criminal justice system, the positive and the negative effects of law and forensic
psychology relationships and, the role of criminal profilers in law enforcement. Below I have
composed an outline, which I will use to guide my research.

Forensic Psychology
Forensic psychology refers to the use of psychological practices and research in civil justice
and criminology. It is a special discipline in psychology and has great fascinations for the
professional and public character of the legal system. There is a lot of misconceptions that have
been held against forensic psychology. Therefore, its history and information are diverse. Hence
there arises a need to assess and analyze forensic psychology to understand it in the civil and
criminal domain. In the psychology field, forensic psychology is one of the newest disciplines, and
it aspires to achieve growth in the future (Concannon & Huss, 2019).
Ethical and moral development in society and their relation to the nature of justice has been
speculated since the era of Aristotle and Plato. However, William Wundt is known to have planted
the first seeds for forensic psychology when he created the first lab in Germany in 1879 (Rieber,
2013) . It has since been expanded on by many other influential psychologists and blossomed into
what it is today. About a decade after Wundt started this lab, a student of his named James Cattell
explored the psychology of testimony by conducting a series of experiments that highlighted the
effects of situational and individual differences (Rieber, 2013). A psychologist named William
Stern collaborated with a criminologist to show the level of inaccuracy in eyewitness accounts
(Rieber, 2013) . Another psychologist named William Marston discovered the link between blood
pressure and lying, which led to the invention of the polygraph test (Rieber, 2013). Other
psychologists and interesting events have contributed to the development of forensic psychology
since the 20th century and it continues to flourish.
The specialty of forensic psychology results from its endeavor to assess human behavioral
aspects directly while researching in during legal processes. This is done through jury decision
making, testimonies from eyewitnesses, and studying criminal behavioral patterns. The

professional practice of psychology also makes forensic psychology special due to it being within
the legal system and doing consultations from the legal system. This professionalism involves both
civil and criminal regulations, the varied areas where the two collaborate (Concannon & Huss,
2019). This explanation of forensic psychology involves both nonclinical and clinical aspect of it.
There is more to forensic psychology than just expert testimony, eyewitness accounts, and
legal proceedings. Forensic psychology intersects with other subfield of psychology like
physiological psychology, organizational psychology, and adolescent developmental psychology.
Regarding adolescent development psychology, forensic psychologists are consulted to analyze
and determine the culpability of juvenile offenders (Taylor, 2019). This helps the justice system
decided the proper venue for rehabilitation, whether it be in a juvenile psychiatric treatment facility
or the penal system.
Forensic psychology intersects with organizational psychology when
analyzing terrorist groups, supremacist groups, cults, and other criminal organizations, by
exploring their inner workings and strategizing how to stop their operations (Taylor, 2019).
Forensic psychology is said to be a professional practice in counseling psychology and clinical
psychology when analyzing psychological disorders and possible treatment (Hugaboom, 2002) .
Forensic psychology is broad because it seeks to do assess and treat disorders present both
in the judicial system and in the clinical setting. The forensic psychologists are supposed to give
reports and testimonies of high standards and consultations that lead to beneficial findings. The
purpose of the introduction of forensic psychology was improving the quality of psychological
services in forensic science. The next purpose is enhancing the process of forensic investigations
to facilitate the systematic evolvement of forensic science. The next purposes are encouraging a
high level of professionalism in forensic investigation and finally encouraging the forensic
investigators to respect and acknowledge the rights of people they are serving (Taylor, 2019). The

psychologists who work in the forensic psychology fields have varied work experience, training,
and education. Most of them hold a higher degree in the psychology field, but today, other training
programs also teach forensic psychology (Golding, 2016).
Most of the forensic psychologists, whether working in private organizations or prisons,
have licenses given by the state board of psychology to permit them to practice it. The license is,
however, granted only upon meeting the educational requirements set by the state board of
psychology. This, yet, has an exception because some of the governmental organizations allow
forensic psychologists without licenses to work with them while under supervision. In applied
forensic psychology, the people working in them have a large number of services they can offer.
For instance, the psychologists who work if correction programs can do a couple of things. They
can attend the inmates with a mental problem, which includes psychological assessment,
screening, group therapy, individual therapy, daily inpatient rounds, court order evaluations, and
conflict management (Taylor, 2019).
These psychologists can do consultations with attorneys, magistrates, prison staff, inmates,
and advocates on matters relating to mental health. They can also give recommendations
concerning the findings of their psychological research. Those forensic psychologist working in
direct connection with attorneys can provide psychological assessments, sexual offender’s
assessment, personality assessment, competency evaluation, assessment of mitigation factor, and
recommendations regarding parent custody, among others. The forensic psychologists who work
in the police departments do crisis management and counseling services (Taylor, 2019).
Psychologists in the forensic psychology field and research any topic that involves both law and
psychology. The forensic psychology field is vast and includes things such as criminal profiling,
methods for jury selection, offering health solutions to offenders, visitations of children, impacting

divorce, providing treatment for drug addicts and custody among others. Forensic psychology is
far from being just a simple subfield. It is a staple in society, the criminal justice system, and the
court system.

SCIENTIFIC METHODS IN PSYCHOLOGY
2
Importance of Research Methods in Psychology
Without a doubt, scientific methods play a pivotal role in carrying out a psychological
assessment. Scientific methods are helpful because the methods are used by psychologist to
make relevant observations, collect data, then formulate theories, test different predictions to
interpret and analyze results. A skilled psychologist needs to make observations among the
participants to measure the individual behavior of clients or patients (Haig, 2019). Coming up
with theories which explain client behavior enables the research to be more reliable and valid.
Typically, scientific methods are crucial in psychology as they demonstrate individuals’ social
behaviors.
Psychological Research Question
The selected psychological question for this paper is, “Could the actions of a serial killer
have been prevented with a more stable upbringing?” Usually, it is hard to conclude whether or
not criminals are born or made. Individuals who support the claim that criminal is born, use
genetic makeup to justify their claim (Ioana, 2013). Whereas those in support of the notion that
criminals are made allude their criminality to environmental factors. Therefore it is always the
debate of nature vs. nurture when it comes to explaining the origin of crime. Childhood
experiences determine if a person grows up to be productive or not. Many serial killers are
victims of sexual abuse, emotionally distant, parental absenteeism, dysfunctional families, or
childhood trauma (Ioana, 2013). Therefore, it is logical that stable upbringing can go a long way
in preventing the actions of serial killers.
The use of Scientific Methods by Psychologists
SCIENTIFIC METHODS IN PSYCHOLOGY
3
Psychologists observe the behavior patterns of serial killers to determine whether or not
stable upbringing could reduce actions of serial killers. Psychology can use the scientific method
to note why family dysfunctions, instability, and parental absenteeism increase the actions of a
serial killer (Haig, 2019). Then, a psychologist can theorize that unstable upbringing contributes
to increased activities of serial killers. Later, psychologists can hypothesize that dysfunctional
upbringing is more likely to increase actions of serial killers. After formulating the hypothesis,
the psychologists will conduct a real experiment to test the validity of the hypothesis. A
psychologist can set aside the study participants and make observations by keeping a close watch
on the participants. If the results align with the hypothesis, then the th…
