Looking at Design
Search the web for a business or organizations website that you find effective (it
would be even better if you can find a website of a potential competitor to your
portfolio project subject). Share the link to this website, and answer the
following questions:
What are some particular things about this website that you admire?
What could have been done better or more concisely?
Could any of the information you see be better represented visually?
Are there areas in the website that could be enhanced by adding a chart or table?
Discuss the aesthetic properties of the website in terms of white space, font style
and color, layout, ease of navigation, etc.

My Answer:
GREWAL Travel Services is a travel agency in Yuba City and potential competitor of
Safarin Travel agency. Its website is https://grewaltravelservices.com and most aspects of the
website are well-presented hence enhancing the appearance. First, the website has included many
images of travel destinations hence clearly attracting the viewer to try out the destinations.
Moreover, I also liked the websites navigation. The viewer effectively accesses all aspects of the
travel agency from the home tab and the arrangement of aspects of navigation allows easy
access. On the other hand, the company could have increased the call to action by clearly
presenting its offers. One has to maneuver the website to find directions on travel destinations.
However, if explicitly presented at first, it may improve the companys call to action made to
viewers.
The website could be more concise if charts and graphs were used to present information
on destinations and pricing. The viewer has a hard time accessing any plans and hence a concise
explanation of the destinations could work better. On the other hand, I think the website
effectively utilizes aesthetics in the overall presentation. It has minimized negative space and
used such spaces for images which enhance appearance. Moreover, the use of different font and
styles places emphasis on some areas and easily communicates the basic message of the website.

The website that I picked was www.starbucks.com since this company would be considered a potential
competitor being a similar business. I will be using the criteria for design that was listed in chapter 17 of our
book. Their 5 main categories for design were balance, alignment, grouping, consistency, and contrasting. The
things that I admired from their website was it seems balanced. There are 4 headliners on the main page, each
in their own rectangle that takes up the length of the page so there is not an overwhelming amount of
information to look at. The rectangles are alternating colors so it creates a sense of consistency.
While there are many things that I admire about this website, the only thing that I feel like I
would change is the header with the links to other pages. I feel like this is minimal
compared to the rest of the design. I feel like they have all the correct tabs like they should
but it blends in more than I would have picked for my own website. They could also make
their logo larger. As of right now, it is a small symbol in the upper left-hand
corner. Starbucks is really big on giving back as I found a tab specifically for social impact
where it talks about giving back to communities and different donations. I feel like this
would be a perfect place to add a chart to show where their donations are going or how
much they have contributed. Starbucks is known for their traditional colors of green and
white which is prominent throughout the entire website. Since white is one of their colors,
you find a good amount of white space throughout the website. I enjoy their layout as it is
not an overload of information and provide a lot of additional links in their header.

Hello class,
The website I have chosen was charmcitycakes.com. This is the famous Ace of Cakes from
the Food Network channel. This is a company that I would love to be in competition with
due to it being a well-known name in the cake business. In chapter 17 it states that there are
five main categories for design. They are balance, grouping, alignment, and consistency. I
believe the website does show great grouping, alignment and consistency very well. I do
believe the balance and contrast needs work. The site shows off some great background
photos but it makes the links hard to see. I think they could have either used a bolder color
or even a border to display the links better. They could have even used three columns below
the pictures to display the links. This could be a way to use white space to draw eyes to links.
Overall the website is easy to navigate and very user friendly. I really liked all the pictures
displayed of their work that has been completed. The fact that they let you select a variety of
cake designs as well as options for custom cake designs really gives the customer a lot of
options. This is what I would like my business to be able to do.

The https://www.apple.com/ website is one of that I admire it is very simple but has many
different features and was well thought out. With the different table to the specific product
so that you can go to them without looking at the others. Then, they also give you the
capabilities of doing a search as well as going even deeper.
One thing they could have done better or more concisely would have been having more
interactive when you hover the various table to show you in greater detail what you could
have done in the tab. One thing in particular. Would have been when shopping you could
hover a say the iPhone tab and it would pop up with the color so that you could go to that
one then once you pick the color it show you the different sizes of internal storage it would
be a quicker way to shop for that person that knows exactly what they want I mean still give
them the current option just improve the on it.
Some of the visual that could be the number of iPhone users on the various network or at
least the big four. They could then break down that data down into repairs and longevity of
the products.
The white space is nice and the fonts are bold and clear to see. Depending on what browser
you have you can turn on dark mode with having the letter and background reverse. For me,
it is easier to read when the background is black and the font is white. Using the site map at
the bottom is easier for me to find certain things faster as it takes each category and also
shows the subcategories too.

One of the sites I frequent is https://pinside.com/. It’s a site for pinball enthusiasts to share
information, buy and sell all things pinball and find places to play pinball.
What are some particular things about this website that you admire? The changing
banner pictures grab your attention. All the main menu items are easy to find at the top of
the screen.
What could have been done better or more concisely? The home page is in a grid pattern like
those discussed in chapter 17 (Technical Communication Today, Johson-Sheehan) but the
small weight of all the items makes it feel heavy and hard to scan for information.
There are plenty of visuals
but nothing that grabs your attention and directs you to a main feature like those shown in
chapter 21 (Technical Communication Today, Johson-Sheehan). The home page could use
improvements to remove all the light weight clutter and become more balanced to make
“raiding” information easier.
Could any of the information you see be better represented visually?
Are there areas in the website that could be enhanced by adding a chart or table? There are areas
on the site that use chats to better explain certain types of data.
Discuss the aesthetic properties of the website in terms of white space, font style and color, layout,
ease of navigation, etc. The color scheme is effective and draws your attention. There is a
comfortable amount of white space along the boarder and between groups. The font is not
formal and gives a fun feel to the site. Navigation from the main menu items is logical and
easy.

Since I’m doing my mock business on an auto repair shop with a restaurant, I figured I
would look up a quick auto repair shop website. The website I picked is:
http://drivethrucarcare.com/
What are some particular things about this website that I admire?
Well, I like how it’s not complicated and simple and I like how they used design principle 3,
by grouping. They used headings to separated their ratings, then the menu, and how to
contact them.
What could have been done better or more concisely?
I don’t think they balanced the layout very well, which falls under design principle 1,
Weighting a Page. In the beginning he seemed pretty unbalanced by the big contact us
portion and at the end, the map is seeming to take over the whole page.
Could any of the information you see be better represented visually?
Again, I would refer to design principle 1, if you have a better balance by not making so
many big items on the page. If you balance the page it would be more comfortable to look at
and navigate.
Are there areas in the website that could be enhanced by adding a chart or table?
I don’t think a chart or table would really help this website. It has a yelp rating but I don’t
really see anything they would want to have a chart or table for.
Discuss the aesthetic properties of the website in terms of white space, fount style and color, layout, ease of
navigation, ect.
I think the font is way too big, it’s a bit overwhelming. It’s almost as if it was designed for
people that can’t see very well. What really doesn’t make sense is the font for the four
selectable menu items is smaller than most of the font on the page. The page goes straight
up and down in sections so it’s pretty easy to navigate.

Here is an example of a website from a design and as such the design of the website is very
well done overall.
I really like the color scheme used here and overall the website does a really good job of
having a clean, simple feel while still conveying the necessary information.
it does a good job of using visuals to capture your eye combined with words to describe their
services.
The layout is very aesthetic while being very easy to navigate as well, providing a nice menu
for navigation to each section.
This is a very well-designed website and makes a good case for their service. They would be a
good candidate for my mock startup gym company to look at doing their design.

The site I picked (no pun intended) would be a direct competitor to my
portfolio business. The site is https://www.ibanez.com/usa/ . The site features
the product lineup, featured artists with their products and stunning photos of
their guitars. The site also features videos, product specifications and links to
their dealer network.
What are some particular things about this website that you admire?
I like the large, animated and stunning photos of their product. Throughout
the site, their product is front and center. The pictures are striking and clearly
present the product. The most important links and social icons are always on
top. The reader can easily navigate around the site.
What could have been done better or more concisely?
Product testimonials and dealer links were not easy to find. There was no
immediate way to click on a product and quickly get to a point to place an
order.
Could any of the information you see be better represented visually?
Product ratings (1 to 5 stars) would be helpful in making a good decision.
Todays amazon generation rely heavily on product ratings when making
choices. MSRP price would also be helpful. Although these guitars are
spare no expense offerings, it would be nice to have a rough price.
Are there areas in the website that could be enhanced by adding a chart
or table?
A chart or two, grouping the guitars by category and price would add value for
the reader. This could be placed towards the bottom of the home page, acting
as a site map.
Discuss the aesthetic properties of the website in terms of white space,
font style and color, layout, ease of navigation, etc.
The site is well balanced, with elements centered and the columns are mixed
between one and four. Sans-serif font is used throughout the site. The font
colors are well matched to the background elements. The navigation bar
follows the page as the reader scrolls down until the product elements come
into view. The animations used throughout the site are subtle but highlight the
product using reverse shading. The site is well designed and keeps the
product front and center at all times.

The website that I chose is https://www.thingiverse.com/.
This is a website where you can upload 3D images for other people to download and print
making it a competitor to my mock business.
the first thing that stands out to me on the site is the featured files and their pictures. I like
this because it has interesting content and grabs your attention. Its overall layout is visually
pleasing and easy to navigate. The theme for the site seems a little bland by just using
gray and white but this may be to highlight the color of the example files. The home page is
well suited for its purpose and I don’t see any data or information that could be represented
with a graph. 3D printing is very technical in nature and the straightforwardness of this
website and its navigation is probably well suited to the majority of its users.

The Go RVing website has admired me for many years, even dating back to my
elementary school years. This is primarily because from the front page, you are greeted with a
number of options to help you understand more about the different types of RVs and where to
find them. The tabs at the top are also easy to navigate with.
Honestly, I couldnt find much of what could be done better with the design, considering
the RV images taking you to each respective info about that RV are straightforward. I also
believe the info on this site is already well-implicated in visual representation. To me, this site
would be a perfect for having a table or two that can show stats of RV sales from sellers
endorsed by GO RVing.
GO RVings site is known for its easy navigation and attractive banner on the front page,
not to mention the color scheme and outdoor background, giving you the sense of nature. It
also gives you straightforward about all RV types, campgrounds, uses of RVs, travel ideas, etc.
Lastly, theres also an acceptable use of white space throughout.

Running head: HISTORICAL INTERPRETATION
1
Discussion 6
Interpreting History
Historical interpretation can be particularly difficult, because history never
exists in a vacuum. Each event is part of a larger historical arc. In
addition, historical events are interpreted differently by individual people. As
a result, each event can be interpreted differently depending on context.
For this weeks forum, choose a moment in history that interests you. Using a
reliable source, summarize the event in 3-5 sentences. Then propose how that
event could be interpreted truthfully as a positive development in human
history, or a negative event in human history. If we can honestly interpret it
both ways, what does that mean about truth in historical research?
When responding to classmates, identify different groups of people who might
benefit from one or the other interpretation. Groups could be organized by
politics, religion, gender, urban versus rural, American versus international, or
any other category. Keep in mind the question of how this tells us more about
truth in historical research.

My Answer:
Historical Interpretation
The issue of whether Americans can vote for a black president had been an issue that
the country had to deal with. In his article, “Our first black president?” Beverly Gage
mentions several events that people argued whether President Warren Harding was black or
not with the Chancellor stating that Harding had a black great-grandmother. However, many
biographers do not agree with it considering their dismissal of the consideration of Harding as
someone from a mixed-race family as a political scandal. Even with the continued
conversation regarding the race of Harding, most Americans think that the truth has been
hard to come by for so long (Gage, 2008). In the present presidential landscape, most
Americans perceive the prospect of a black person in the Oval Office as a sign of progress.
HISTORICAL INTERPRETATION
2
The election of a black president is perceived as progress that one can take as
evidence to post-racial national consciousness. The race has been a sensitive issue in the
United States, and the election of a black president is a sign that the country has begun
placing their divisive history behind them. However, the truth might be that Americans might
not know it yet considering the existence of some racial issues within the country. The
changing political landscape is a change from the white-supremacist heyday of the past to the
one of inclusion and consideration of everyone as equal.

On August 26, 1789, The Assembly adopted the Human Declaration. This statement has
now become the model most modern constitutions. It establishes the fundamental rights
of the citizen: right to liberty, to security, equality of all before the Law and finally the
principle of popular sovereignty, by which the “Nation” and no longer a “Kinship” of
divine right, is provclames depositary of power.
Emmanuel kant in his enthusiastic look on the Declaration of the Human Rights reflects
both the far-reaching impact of this event and the rupture with the past. “such a
phenomenon in the history of mankind will never again be forgotten, for it has revealed
in human nature a disposition to progress and an ability to achieve it such that no
politician could have conceived them. (Doctrine of Law,1790)”. Human Rights follow a
complex genealogy in the long arc of history before leading to the adoption of the United
Nations of a Universal Declaration in 1948.
To the natural rights of man, natural and inalienable rights are combined the political
and institutional rights which the right of expression and opinion derive from, in a state
anxious to respect and protect. Each one can aligne himself to all rights and all freedoms
proclaimed in without distinction of any kind including race, color, sex, language,
religion, political opinion or opinion of national and social origins, fortune, birth and
other situation. The French Declation privileged the understanding of all the rights
recognized to a member of society and the duties implied. The one from 1948 retains the
enumeration of attributes and the various rights deriving from freedom and equality,
including dignity, peace and social progress. My point is that it needs an amendment
