BUSI 3003 Walden Nadler Interventions Operating Environment Change Discussion Think of an organization you familiar with that need to make change in its culture and BRIEFLY explain how can Nadler’s Twelve Interventions for Operating Environment Change help in this organization change to be effective? 3 to 4 paragraphs only. Instruction:
Over the years, nutrition research has evolved into a scientific field of study that
continues to grow in its impact on food production and supply. The experts charged
with trying to apply this science to advance public health have tried to come up with
simple but attractive graphics to express the concepts of “good” nutrition. Because the
science is still so young and the research often raises more questions than it answers,
these graphics have undergone subtle changes. The original graphic, the Food
Pyramid, still included fats and sweets (yellow) as well as a larger section for dairy
that included cheeses (blue). The My Plate graphic that replaced the Food Pyramid
eliminated any reference to fats and sweets and suggests that the only dairy should be
milk (presumably nonfat). What is the science behind these changes? This week,
you’ll have a chance to discuss three of these changes in the Dietary Guidelines
Discussion Board.
The 2015 Guidelines set the science-based standard for what the experts call “a
healthy eating pattern” and reflected many changes from the Guidelines we studied in
this course five years ago. In October or November of 2020, the new Guidelines will
appear. It’s interesting to postulate about the changes that will result from the
information we’ve gained over the last five years.
Getting to know the Dietary Guidelines:
Nutrition research is a young and growing field – releasing new information at a pace that tempts
us to jump to conclusions about what we should or should not eat. America is a nation of such
diverse populations with so many cultural and regional differences that it is difficult to
extrapolate results of any single piece of research and apply it to any but the population directly
involved in that study..Contributing to the confusion is the personal nature of our food choices
that result from an infinite number of variables: individual tastes, time, and financial resources,
to name a few. Add to that the fact that new “foods” are being introduced to consumers all the
time with so much nutrition information on the label that we could spend more time choosing an
item than we would eating it! Some of the research reported in the 2010 Guidelines still
stands as accepted knowledge. Other areas have been challenged and found wanting in terms of
applicability to the dietary habits of the American population in general. To make the changes
necessitated by new scientific data, the committee of doctors and nutrition experts who
developed the 2015 Guidelines were besieged by public commentary and input from vested
interest groups, such as the meat packing, sugar cane, and dairy industries. Back then the
controversies swirled around the meat and dairy industries, and issues of sustainability. The 2020
Guidelines are being developed as we speak, and they, in turn, will undoubtedly be the source of
much discussion and dissent.
A nation’s public health policies are truly effective only if they change the health behaviors of the
people for whom they are created. Individual action becomes a community effort to effect local
change, and this translates into a much broader level of influence. This week, we’ll read the
Dietary Guidelines (also discussed in your text), and as we do, try to imagine how this policy
statement could be put into wider practice. And once you’ve studied the Guidelines and their
recommendations, you can use them as benchmarks against which to assess your own personal
eating habits.

You’ll read the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines and participate in a Discussion
Board on the recommendations set forth in that document. The Guidelines are a
national policy document that seeks to inform the public about nutrition science.
Unfortunately, this document is often ignored or undervalued, even in nutrition
education. This happens for many reasons, not the least of which is a natural resistance
to being told “what to eat” when food is such a matter of personal taste and cultural
diversity. In reality, the Guidelines don’t try to be prescriptive. They are intended to
represent the results of years of research into the association of dietary intake and
chronic diseases. As we become increasingly aware of issues such as the influence of
food production on the environment, and the social inequity that separates the “haves”
from the “have nots”, we need to understand how national policies and practices are
influenced by the economic, political, and legislative forces in current society. It is
important for us to become educated consumers of not only food,
but also the information about food that bombards us from so
many sources. in order to recognize how the food industry can
influence the application of nutrition science, and to doing so, we
become critical thinkers about our own individual food choices.
Assignment 1
In this assignment, briefly please address the following questions:
1.
Was this the first time you had read the Guidelines? If you have studied them before,
in what context did you learn about them?
2.
At this point in time, do you think your current diet aligns with these
recommendations? Which ones, if any?
3.
For the next part of your discussion, choose one of the following questions and write
a brief response.
-In terms of proportion of calories taken in every day, what are the recommendations
for protein intake, compared to the recommendations for intake of fats and carbohydrates?
Does this fit with your idea of how much protein the average person should be consuming?
-What are the newest recommendations on carbohydrate intake? We hear all the time
that carbs make us fat and contribute unwanted calories to the diets of a citizenry that is
markedly obese and among which diabetes Type 2 has reached epidemic proportions.
However, the Guidelines recommend that half of our daily calories should come from
carbohydrate. Does this make sense? Why or why not?
-We hear all the time that we should limit our intake of cholesterol-containing foods.
Indeed, the 2010 Guidelines suggested we should try to eat as few cholesterol-heavy foods as
possible. However, the more recent Guidelines have taken a less restrictive approach to
dietary cholesterol, and focused instead on recommendations for intake of saturated
and transfats. What do the current Guidelines recommend concerning foods containing these
lipids, and what scientific findings do you think may have led to the new guidelines?
Instruction for assignment 2:
One of the stated goals for this course is to develop educated consumers of the nutrition
information with which we are constantly bombarded. Everyone wants to be healthy, and the
first place most of us turn to for help is the Internet. It’s free, accessible, and to some degree
anonymous. Although we are aware that nutrition scams exist, some of the websites that sell
nutrition products or promote a special food or dietary supplement are so convincing that we
almost believe that we can “Lose Belly Fat Forever!” or “Cure cancer with Kawala
Extract!!”. Distinguishing between fact vs fiction, misrepresentation vs authenticity, and
anecdotal reports vs science-based research requires critical thinking and analysis.
start your web search to find an example of a “questionable” nutrition product, a site that
promises extreme claims for a “superfood”, or a website that is promoting a diet or dietary
supplement that will cure obesity, Alzheimer’s disease, or cancer. Before you start your search,
Once you’ve completed your search, write a brief thread on the Health Information Forum . Be
sure to explain why you think this site or product is a “scam” or the food or product its
promoting is hyed way beyond its worth. Be sure to include the URL for the site you selected to
review.
Assignment 2
Secondly, you’ll have an opportunity to demonstrate your ability to sort out nutrition fact from
nutrition myth on the web. The Internet and social media generate a massive amount of
information and misinformation – some of it promoting special “superfoods”, nutritional products
or food supplements that promise to cure just about every chronic disease known to man.
Separating commercial and vested interest “hype” from scholarly, non-biased research is the goal
of this assignment.
