2/ for the second assignment I need a paraphrase the following passage from Jia Tolentino’s article:
There’s a painful distance between the chipper narratives surrounding labor and success in America and the lived experience of workers. A similar conflict drove Nathanael West, in 1934, to publish the novel “A Cool Million,” which satirized the HoratioAlgerbootstrapfables that remained popular into the Great Depression. “Alger is to America what Homer was to the Greeks,” West once wrote. His protagonist in “A Cool Million,” Lemuel Pitkin, is an innocent, energetic striver, tasked with saving his mother’s house from foreclosure. A series of Alger-esque plot twists ensue. But Pitkin, rather than triumphing, ends up losing his teeth, his eye, his leg, his scalp, and finally his thumb. Morris Dickstein, in his book “Dancing in the Dark: A Cultural History of the Great Depression,” notes, “The novel ends with Lem as a vaudeville clown being beaten nightly until he simply falls apart.” A former President named Shagpoke Whipple gives a speech valorizing Pitkin’s fate, extolling “the right of every American boy to go into the world and . . . make his fortune by industry.” Whipple describes Pitkin’s dismemberment—“lovingly,” Dickstein adds—and tells his audience that, through Pitkin’s hard work and enthusiastic martyrdom, “America became again American.” Research Summary

Expanding your ability to do research
This assignment sheet contains the instructions for both Research Summary 1 and 2. Please note that
the assignments have different requirements: Research Summary 2 contains a fifth component in which
you address the ways in which the source counters your claim.
For your two Research Summaries, you will hone your research skills by using advanced search features
in the search engine of your choice. By doing this, you will be able to find sources that are hopefully
more useful than the standard search that you might do while looking for help on a less academic
subject.
Each Research Summary will include the following information:
1. Four sources that you intend to use in your final Argumentative Research Essay
2. An overview paragraph that summarizes the source in fifty words or less
3. A connections paragraph that explains why this source helps you prepare a more effective
argument. This paragraph will be between 50 and 100 words.
4. A screen shot of the search you used to get to the source. In that search you will need to use
one of the Advanced Search features available in the search engine of your choice. If you do not
know how to take a screen shot, please note that for every computer there is a different set of
keystrokes. In all cases, however, you can simply paste the resulting image into a Word
document.
For Research Summary 2, add a fifth point that explains how this source counters your argument in
50-100 words. If you would like a sample of how to do this, please ask your instructor.
Samples
1. Your overview statement might look something like this:
In the article “How the Gig Economy is Reshaping Career Options for Would-to-be Graduates,”
Abdullahi Muhammed examines ways that those graduating from college might take advantage
of the gig economy. Addressing some common critiques of the gig economy, Muhammad argues
that the gig economy offers many options for recent graduates.
2. A sample connection paragraph might describe the connection like this:
Muhammed’s articles addresses the argument I am making in my research essay by pointing out
ways that those of us graduating in the next few years can utilize the gig economy to advance
our careers. For example, he notes that jobs in this economy often offer much faster ways of
making one’s brand known more quickly than can be done in a traditional workplace, and he
provides tips for how to best position oneself in order to take advantage of these opportunities.
3. The final screen shot might look something like this:
To get there, click on the “Advanced Search” button on your search engine of choice, which should bring
you to the following screen:
Notice how in this sample both the ‘this exact word or phrase’ and ‘site or domain’ text boxes are
utilized.

CORONAVIRUS AND LOCKDOWN

Q: How will the public respond to changes in policy as we come out of the lock-down?
The process of initiating change is not always easy as some people are open to it, while
others prefer things staying the same way. The case of COVID-19 pandemic that has forced
thousands of countries all over the world to initiate lock-down policies illustrates the challenges
that come when people have to change on the way they are used to live and go about their daily
activities. Lock-down is a state of isolation that is instituted by authorities to restrict people from
interacting and also to minimize movement, and that serves as a security measure. The lockdown imposed during the coronavirus pandemic is used to ease the transmission process of the
disease. The need for the lock-down is to ensure that there is minimal transfer of the same
disease to a large population while those infected are controlled under their special areas to
undergo treatment (Weible et al. 2020). The lock-down will impact the lives of the people in
different ways and will change the way people respond to the policies that are set.
From the research done so far, the public is relying on media as the only way to reach the
authority for their demands. The policies established during the coronavirus pandemic impact the
public in different ways and are causing changes in the way the public is responding to the
pandemic. Lock-down as a strategy to curb the widespread of the COVID-19 has changed the
way people are responding to policies. When the lock-down is lifted in different areas, the public
will respond differently to the changes in policies. The public will either accept or be against
some of the policies depending on how such policies will affect their lives. The lifting of the
lock-down will realize an economically affected population, where people will be struggling to
stabilize since their source of income will have been affected (Weible et al. 2020). Therefore, the
policies that are not favorable may face opposition from the people. The response to the COVID-
CORONAVIRUS AND LOCKDOWN

19 pandemic relies heavily on mass behavioral change, and lock-down is one of the behavioral
changes adopted. Behavioral changes have negative impacts on the lives of the public, and this
will also result in a negative response to the changes in policies after the lock-down. The reaction
is going to vary based on economic wellbeing and age.
There is more likely to have negative behavioral responses than positive because of the
adverse effects caused by the lock-down. The lock-down minimized the mobility of people
meaning that it will have a big impact on economic stability, which can affect the way people
react to the lock-down. Millions of people have already lost their jobs, and once the lock-down
ends an economic activity return to normal, they will have to start looking for jobs. For example,
in the United States, over 40 million people have lost their jobs and will be looking for
employment, making the unemployment rate to rise to 14.7% (Aratani, 2020). Therefore, many
people might neglect and ignore the rules due to desperate measures of trying to return to their
normal lives. Therefore, as much as the restriction of crowding and other policies that regulate
people to minimize the spread of the disease, there are situations where people will abandon
them so as they can make a living. The reason is that people will lose faith in their government
because they feel like it is their responsibility to try and protect their wellbeing not only in health
but also in terms of economic stability (Sridhar, 2020). Numerous articles are showing people
lack of faith or trust in their government due to the likelihood of an economic crisis after the
lock-down. Many people are already showing the loss of confidence in the government,
especially in the UK, United States, and Italy, among others where they have experienced the
worse effect of the pandemic (Quilty-Harper & Layal, 2020). Also, more negative behaviors of
abandoning of the policies after lock-down is likely to come from people of low income and
middle-income society as the majority of these populations do not have savings account or

business that can generate funds but rely on the employments. It will be challenging to try to
regulate or monitor people to follow the set policies after the lock-down unless governments can
provide sufficient funds and job opportunities for all people who lost their jobs, which is
economically impossible to achieve (Weinberg, 2020).
Finally, the reactions of people may vary based on the age of people. Despite the high
economic burden, reports indicate that out that over 95% is likely to accept the lock-down
measures and is likely to accept the after measures to control the disease (Sridhar, 2020). The
reason is because of the adverse effects that people have experienced. Currently, over 300 000
people have lost their lives due to coronavirus, and over 2.5 million have recovered from it.
Recovery and fatalities vary with age (Wolrdometer, 2020). The young generation, the working
class, and the old people are likely to react differently to the policies after lock-down. For the
adults, they are likely to support the measures set by the government on controlling the COVID19 spread. The reason is that the population indicates that they are most vulnerable to die from
coronavirus. However, there is likely to be a mixed reaction in the working class or young adults
based on various factors like their economic status (King’s College London, 2020). Those that
are financially stable are likely to support the policies and adhere to them. However, those that
have financial strain may strive to keep up with the policies after coronavirus even if they agree
with the policies. However, reports indicate that young people are likely to ignore the rules
because they are more likely to recover from the virus than others. However, this may vary based
on wealth conditions (BBC News, 2020). Those who have pre-existing health problems, no
matter the age, are likely to support and strictly follow the policies implemented to control the
spread of coronavirus. Also, young adults, especially those in high school and college, are highly

exposed to getting the coronavirus due to the need for constant gathering in class and the love to
attend social events (Weinberg, 2020).
In conclusion, there are likely to be multiple reactions of people on the policies that will
be set after coronavirus. There is expected to be positive and negative behaviors based on several
variables across societies not because they do not know the adverse effect of coronavirus, but
because of other issues. For example, old people and economically stable with no financial
struggle are likely to observe and promote the policies. However, those that are unemployed and
the young generation are likely to break and oppose the majority of the rules because of different
reasons. It is likely to have a mixture of reactions on the set policies, and that is why many types
of research are dedicated to finding risk mitigation strategies of controlling coronavirus spread
when the lock-down ends. The unclear situation poses a challenge to the government on what are
the best strategies and policies that they can utilize to ensure that coronavirus is controlled once
the lock-down ends without a high opposition from the people?
