Even though death is inevitable and nurses are there to also support patients and their family members through the dying process, some nurses themselves take death to heart and feel as if they have failed their patients and their family members (Zheng, Lee, & Bloomer, 2017). As nurses, we need to prepare mentally and emotionally when caring for patients and understand that we may not be able to save everyone (Kinzbrunner & Policzer, 2011). For the nurses who are unable to cope with the loss of a patient, it may be helpful to speak to other nurses about their experiences with losing patients and try to gain as much insight from that conversation as possible (Zheng et al., 2017).

Nurses need to remember that it is okay to cry with the family members when a patient dies (Zheng et al., 2017). This lets them know that you cared about their loved one, but bare in mind that you do not want your grief to overshadow their grief (Zheng et al., 2017). Other strategies can be used to help nurses to cope with death namely, meditating, giving yourself a break, giving yourself time to grieve, and also understanding that you did everything in your power to help the patient (Zheng et al., 2017). As nurses we know that we may experience the death of a patient at least once, and we need to constantly remind ourselves that we are doing everything we can to provide the best care for our patients (Zheng et al., 2017). Understand that you were a part of a team that attempted to save a patient, regardless of the end result (Zheng et al., 2017).
