Boston University Examining Issues Facing Nursing Essay focus on a current issue in nursing; andexamine this issue in the context of written opinions expressed through three (3) separate types of media. Issues are often value laden; issues in health care and in nursing are no different. Concerns about the state of our health care system and the state of nursing in Canada have been discussed at length within the media, government, and nursing organizations. While it is often difficult to differentiate fact from fiction and opinion, public opinion is often influenced by what is written in the popular press or on the Internet My Definition of Nursing
I perceive nursing as a practice that focuses on improving the experiences of patients as they
negotiate healthcare processes. Nursing is a specialized profession underpinned by the value
of compassion, ethical principles, and theories that constantly evolve towards providing
superior care services to patients. As such, the profession can be defined in two fundamental
realms of perception, including the heart and mind. In the heart, nursing is calling for nurses
to alleviate suffering in society and respect everyone in the pursuit of such an objective. In
mind, nursing practice is underlined by skills and experiences that emerge from a rigorous
process of learning.
The Primary Goal of Nursing
The primary goal of nursing is to assist individuals, families, and communities in achieving
better health outcomes through the promotion of health, as well as restoration and
maintenance of good health amidst illnesses. In doing so, nurses tend to understand people’s
interactions with their environments, as well as the implications of such interactions on their
health outcomes.
The Key Values in My Philosophy
Various values underpin my nursing philosophy. They include compassion, dignity, integrity,
obedience, collaboration, and determination. The value of compassion arises from the
understanding that people often experience various challenges in life. Majority of such
challenges emanate from poor health statuses. As such, nursing is one practice through which
I can help ease the pain that people experience. The value of dignity arises from the
understanding and acknowledgement that people deserve to be treated with respect.
Nursing an Art and Science
I would describe nursing as both an art and science. As an art, nursing transcends theoretical
basis of the practice to include the actual implementation of skills, experiences, and education
in the delivery of healthcare services to individuals (Jasmine, 2009). In other words, it
involves the application of the information and training acquired to optimize care given to
patients in and outside health facilities. Therefore, nursing as art requires people to bridge the
gap between theory and practice through mentorship, internship, and persistent practice. As a
science, people undergo rigorous education and training to become nurses (Jasmine, 2009).
My Nursing Philosophy and Nursing Practice
My philosophy that nursing is a calling tends to guide my everyday approach to nursing
practice. This philosophy is informed by the central value of compassion and other values
described in the preceding section. As such, I tend to approach nursing practice with the
understanding that I am doing one of the most critical things in the world. Human beings tend
to undergo many challenges in life. Health care problems are some of the challenges.
Therefore, through nursing, I help the health care sector to restore people’s health statuses,
maintain high-quality life and minimize risk factors. Based on this philosophy, my approach
to nursing practice is based on the understanding that no one can genuinely pay me the value
of my services.
Relationship between My Philosophy and Practice Standards and Codes of Ethics
My philosophy describes nursing as a calling to help the community. However, it also
acknowledges that the kind of help that nurses provide to people through the healthcare
setting is complex and sensitive, given that it deals with the lives of people. As such, one of
the values that underline my philosophy is obedience. As explained in the preceding section,
the value of obedience arises from the understanding that the nursing practise should be
guided by specific principles, best practices, and theories, codes of ethics, rules and
regulation.
The Relationship between My Philosophy and Nursing Theory
My philosophy tends to align with Hildegard Peplau’s interpersonal theory of nursing. This
theory asserts that the relationship between nurses and their patients goes through four
development phases, including orientation, identification, exploration, and resolution
(Hagerty, Samuels, Norcini-Pala & Gigliotti, 2017). In the orientation phase, nurses help
patients to identify both the problem and type of healthcare solution needed to address the
problem.

Find three articles on the same issue/topic.
o One of the articles must be from a popular periodical or media source, preferably
something you may have at home (such as Macleans, Time, Reader’s Digest, or
your local newspaper – either print based or online version) or CBC, CTV, or CNN online
articles.
o Your second article must be from a scholarly periodical either print version [e.g. The
Canadian Nurse] or retrieved from a database [e.g. AU Library, CINAHL, Medline, etc.].
o The third article must be from a Web site that is not merely a Web version of a print
source. The articles should represent a range of views; in other words, these articles
should not all agree.
The introduction includes a thesis that prepares your reader for the general topic the articles
address, the issues they raise, and the position you will be taking.
Summarize each article separately by stating in your own words the important information
presented in each article and any arguments the authors make.
o Do not paraphrase the whole article; present the main points briefly—each summary
should be one paragraph long, two at the most.
o When summarizing, it is not appropriate to dwell on extended examples (such as
personal case histories or stories); you do not need to summarize complex statistical
parts of a study.
o You should focus on the main ideas and issues discussed. You could briefly refer to any
specific personal stories or statistical sections of the piece (using one or two sentences).
Respond to the three articles by:
o comparing the authors’ credibility, documentation, and support for claims;
o evaluating any disagreements or agreements between the authors; and
o articulating your own position on their ideas or issues. This means more than just stating
your opinion; you must also explain it.
Describe how your personal and professional values influence your views on this issue.
Document your sources using correct APA style. This paper adheres to a 6 page limit excluding
reference and title pages.
