you care about, you certainly will have to at some point. The good news is that you
now have easy access to the best science-based health information presented in
easy to understand ways. Knowledge really is power – it puts you in a much better
position to work with physicians and other parts of the health care system.
MedLine Plus is a service of the National Library of Medicine, which is part of the
National Institutes of Health, the source of funding for much of the research on
human health-related topics in the USA. I strongly encourage you to explore all of
this web site (http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/). It is the first place to go for
every aspect of human health and it has pointers to a multitude of other
authoritative sources of information. Save yourself the bother of a Google search
and start here anytime you have a health-related question. You can even sign up for
automatic email updates on the topic(s) of your choice.
This being a Human Genetics course, we are going to concentrate on the
Genetics/Birth Defects section of MedLine Plus for our first writing assignment:

Your mission is to pick a disease/syndrome from this web page, any
disease/syndrome, and write at least 1,000 words about it. Specifically, I expect you
to do the following:
* Introduce the subject in terms your mother would understand (assuming she’s
not a molecular geneticist). Tell us about symptoms, age-of-onset, frequency, etc…
* The main section of the paper should describe in more detail IN YOUR OWN
WORDS what exactly is known about the disease/syndrome, and should tell what
treatment, if any, is available. This being a human genetics class, tell us about what,
if anything, is known about the genetic basis of the disease/syndrome.
* Finally, conclude with some conclusions. Tell us about ongoing research,
potential treatments in clinical trials, etc… – where possible.
Obviously, this should all be in your own words (plagiarism is a very serious no-no,
and will be dealt with harshly – see the course syllabus for further information and
links). Quotations are allowed, but should not amount to more than two or three
sentences in the entire paper, and they must be properly cited. Your paper must
be both on 8.5 x 11 paper; 1-inch margins, double-spaced using a 12-point font
(preferably Times New Roman or Arial) and electronically submitted in an
assignment folder enabled with Turnitin.com on D2L. Upload either a MS
Word .docx or PDF file to avoid grading delays or resubmission. It is strongly
recommended that you modify your paper if it is more than 40% similarity
with other online resources.
