Make sure to specify which work you would like to write on before starting the essay. There also should be no evidence as this is just a visual descriptive analysis. Also the first part where you need to draw a drawing schematic is unnecessary, just complete the essay. I have also attached a couple documents with the general topics covered in the course as well as some key terms that would be great to integrate into the essay. Finally if you need any sources for the work the best place to look would be the louvre paris museum website. Midterm Writing Assignment: Visual Analysis

Midterm Writing Assignment: Visual Analysis
AH1003A – Introduction to Art Through Paris Museums, Spring 2019
Due: Wednesday, February 27, 2019
Assignment:
The primary purpose of this assignment is to help you build your skills in one of the
fundamental aspects of all art historical endeavors: visual analysis. Your task is to describe
and analyze the formal elements of one of the works of art from the list on the back of this
page (works which are similar to those that we will discuss in our class meetings during the
first half of the semester).
A formal analysis focuses exclusively on the art work as an object and those elements which
comprise the object (composition, line, color, light, space, proportion and scale). You will
not be discussing contextual elements such as the time and place in which the artwork was
created or its possible significance at the time of its creation. That sort of contextual analysis
will be the focus of your final writing assignment.
This assignment has two parts. The first is a schematic drawing and a short “brainstorming”
list. The second is a one to two page written visual analysis of the work of art.
For the first part, create a schematic drawing of the artwork you have chosen. You will not be
graded on your artistic ability for this part of the assignment! Rather, this drawing is intended
to help you to address the composition and use of line, proportion and scale in the palette.
Next, in the space around your drawing, create a short “brainstorming” list of observations
related to the formal elements of the work of art.
For your written analysis, start with the “big picture”: what does the artwork look like as a
whole, and how are its elements arranged? Note where your eyes are first drawn, where and
how your eyes move through the work, and then ask yourself how these areas of focus and
visual movement are created. Then, move to smaller and more specific details of the artwork.
Your analysis should focus upon the most prevalent formal elements of the work (line, color,
light, space, proportion and scale) and the visual effects that they create.
Ideally, if you were to give your written formal analysis to a friend who had never seen the
object, s/he would be able to describe or draw the object for you, or at least pick it out of a
lineup. In writing a formal analysis, focus on creating a logical order so that your reader
doesn’t get lost. Additionally, you should never assume that because your instructor has seen
the work, s/he knows what you are talking about. Be as clear and detailed in your writing as
possible.
Guidelines:
The visual analysis should be 500 words (about two pages) in length. It should be typed in 12
pt. Times New Roman font on A4 paper with 1-inch margins on all sides and should be
double-spaced. Please note that this may require you to change the default settings in Word.
Papers should be printed on white paper in black ink and should be stapled.
