The spiritual disciplines of serving and stewardship are the heart of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Jesus said, “Even as the Son of man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Mt. 20:28, RSV). One’s service to Christ is demonstrated in the sharing of one’s time, talents, and treasure, in a single word, “stewardship.” Closely connected to serving and stewardship are the disciplines of fasting, silence, and solitude. Each of these disciplines were practiced by Jesus Christ and transformed His disciples into His glorious image.
