Image

Elements of a poem that invoke any of the five senses to create a set of mental images. Specifically, using vivid or figurative language to represent ideas, objects, or actions.

Abstraction

Describing ideas rather than events or objects.

Line

A unit of language into which a poem is divided, which operates on principles which are distinct from grammatical structures, such as the sentence.

Stanza

A grouping of lines separated from others in a poem. In modern free verse (Links to an external site.), the stanza, like a prose paragraph, can be used to mark a shift in mood, time, or thought.

Diction

The choice of words by a writer.

Sound

A concept in which the phonetic aspects of human speech are foregrounded instead of more conventional semantic and syntactic values.

Metaphor

A comparison that is made directly, without pointing out a similarity by using words such as “like,” “as,” or “than.

Simile

A comparison made with “as,” “like,” or “than.”

Syntax

Word order.

Form

The particular set of rules, whether it be the number of lines, the length or number of stanzas, rhyme scheme, or subject matter that a poem follows.

End-stopped Line

A line ending at a grammatical boundary or break—such as a dash or closing parenthesis—or with punctuation such as a colon, a semicolon, or a period.

Enjambed Line

The running-over of a sentence or phrase from one poetic line to the next, without terminal punctuation; the opposite of end-stopped (Links to an external site.).

Voice

The combination of imagery, tone, patterns of sound, rhythm, and diction in a poem.

Persona

A dramatic character, distinguished from the poet, who is the speaker of a poem.

Free Verse

Nonmetrical, non-rhyming lines that closely follow the natural rhythms of speech.

I want you to read these terms and then read the poems in the file called IntroVocabPoems in the Files tab. I want you to pick three of these terms and describe how it’s being used in one of the poems. Try to pick one that is a little bit less obvious: like free verse for example. Please be as descriptive as possible.

Example from the 1st poem:

It turns out there’s a difference between a detail

and an image. If the dandelion on the sidewalk is

mere detail, the dandelion inked on a friend’s bicep

is an image because it moves when her body does,

This is an example of an enjambed line because the lines run over into the next one without any punctuation. The feeling that creates is a sense of rhythm and continuation without any breaks created by an end-stopped line.

I know this might be tricky, but try your best and I know you don’t know much now about poetry, but try to creatively think about how each effect(vocabulary term) works in the poem. Again, you can pick any poem you like, but please read them all and practice identifying these poetry terms in the text.
