Resiliency and Talia
Resiliency is defined as the ability to cope with adversity and live life to the individuals set of normal regardless of adversity (Zastrow, Kirst-Ashman & Hessenauer, 2019). Although Talia has experienced an extreme adverse situation she was able to work through it in order to get her life back to her set of norms. Talia talked with the counselor through her anxiety, she was able to pin point the times it was happening and use breathing techniques to keep herself calm (Plummer, Makris & Brocksen, 2014). These actions prove Talia has resiliency. Talia has now pinpointed that her parents are causing her anxiety to spike (Plummer, Makris & Brocksen, 2014). It is important for the counselor to point out that Talia has overcome many adverse situations by talking through them, and the counselor should point out how far Talia has come since the start of their counseling (Plummer, Makris & Brocksen, 2014). Showing Talia her resiliency and celebrating her progress can help her not feel so defeated.
Resiliency in Social Work
Lynch (2019) talk about resiliency within social workers themselves and how that can help them build resiliency to the trauma they see everyday. The I can, I am, and I have model shows different self-motivated resiliency factors (Lynch, 2019). This can also be applied to working with victims of trauma such as Talia. Helping individuals who have experienced trauma that they have such as I can solve problems, I am a confident optimistic person, and I have people who support and love me, can help them have confidence that they can work through their trauma (Lynch, 2019). This is just one example of how resiliency can be used in the social work practice.

Talia is experiencing stress and hardship with her parents because of the trauma that she experienced. As Talia’s social worker, I would apply the strength-based approach to help her with her trauma. We will focus on her abilities, motivations, and other positive qualities to help her solve problems (Zastrow & Kirst- Ashman, 2019). For example, despite the abuse, Talia has demonstrated strengths by attending her sessions, talking about her feelings, and keeping a daily journal(Plummer, 2014). By identifying these strengths, I am providing Talia with positive feedback about how she can solve problems, improve her situation, and thrive.
Talia could feel empowered if she were to share her story with others. As Talia’s social worker, I could link her to support groups where she could have an opportunity to regain a sense of self and speak out about her experiences. The support groups could allow Talia to learn coping skills, increase her social support network, and understand the effects of trauma.
Talia also expressed frustration over her parent’s constant phone calls. As Talia’s social worker, I would discuss with her the importance of having a good social support network to decrease stress and help to reduce depression and anxiety.
I would apply the concepts of resiliency to my social work practice by helping my client face stressful experiences with greater confidence. As a social worker, I will link my clients to the tools and necessary resources to bounce back (Whitney, 2007). I would help my clients recognize their strengths and empower them to use these strengths to overcome obstacles they are facing.
