And what is the goal of designing urban farming apartment building . S is a multi-use complex serving the living and working needs of the Pigtown
community. The primary goal was to integrate a live vs. work mix under one roof. This building would offer the
ability for tenants to grow their own food steps away from their units. Pigtown Hybrid Apartments aims to en-
gage the community by delivering a public hub to surrounding neighborhood for gathering and growing food.
The concept began with the thought of the urban farming area to be centralized and then to essentially wrap the
living units around that component creating a double loaded corridor in between the units and the urban farm.
Enclosed by glazing the urban farming component will function as standard greenhouse. I chose to only imple-
ment a standard growing system to ensure more personal connection and use for the community and tenants.
Each floor has about 3,500 sf of growing space within the urban farming greenhouse including 18 vertical tow-
ers and 20 planting tables for potting trays. Pigtown Hybrid Apartments has a 32 total apartment units, a com-
munity cafe/library, intensive green roof, and a 26,694 total sf growing area. This design will demonstrate the
best practice of how to bring people together, allow for now popular urban farming, and will offer an exciting
experience to live and farm under one roof.
