University of Central Florida Taiye Selasi Video Essay For this essay I will ask you to experiment with and attack it from an entirely different perspective. I’m not asking for merely a revision of the earlier draft, but instead a totally new treatment of the subject. Perhaps you’d like to take a travel narrative and turn it into a how-to essay. Perhaps you’d like to argue from an opposing side of an issue that you focused on in an earlier essay. Perhaps you’d like to rethink your entire perspective on something that happened in a memoir event. Perhaps you’d like to shift the point of view of the essay. What sort of radical shift you make in the approach to the subject matter is up to you. Be as creative and experimental as you like. I’ll reward you for taking a rhetorical risk and penalize you for playing it safe and sticking close to the design of the old essay. Feel free to run any ideas you have by me if you’re so inclined. It should be between 500-750 wordsFor this essay . Include one-paragraph analysis in which you explain what you learned about writing from the assignment and progression of that particular essay. In the analysis paragraph, be sure to include literary vocabulary you’ve learned along the way when discussing the essay (e.g., hook, point of view, structure, diction, grammar, imagery, dialogue, setting, hyperbole, personification, metaphor, etc.) In the video, Taiye Selasi says, “My experience is where I am from (6.04).” When the
author states this, it is tough to interpret without hearing the explanation or the meaning of the
quotation. At first, Selasi may seem illogical when she says that her experience is where she
came from, but after the explanation, one sees the logic of the phrase and why it makes sense
than how people are used to saying that they are from a particular nation or nations. I learned that
many people, including me, have a very wrong perception or belief of where we are from, and
that may limit self-identity. However, following the concept of identifying the self with
experience or the locality a person has stayed based on the three-step test that Selasi explains
makes a lot of sense when a person tries to keep an open mind.
The reason why I support and believe what Selasi is trying to say is because the majority
of people get to live in a specific part of a locality that has very different and unique features
than another place within a nation. In other words, what Selasi is trying to mean is that a person
from Texas has very different attributes from a person in New York. When a person says that he
is from the United States, then they possess all the traits of a person from Texas and New York,
which is wrong. That is why Selasi continues to say that all experience is local because it is
impossible to have experience of a whole nation.
Additionally, the speech I learned that experience of a particular place can make a person
feel like they are home even though it is their first time to be there. For instance, a person can go
to a country in Africa from Europe or Asia and find out that a particular locality has all the things
that resemble their homes like the food, traditions, cultures, and other things that may make the
place feel like home. Therefore, the concept of where a person belongs is vital because it will
help a person learn an in-depth understanding of what they like, how they are, their perception,
food, clothing, and other things because it is what they experience making them associate with a
particular place. I think understanding the importance of experience can help improve the sense
of belongingness that many people fail to see its importance. Having a feeling of belongingness
can help improve the self-identity of a person.
However, one part I dislike or disagreed on the video is when Selesi says that referring to
a nation is based on power. I think it is wrong because there are general traits that a person has
that are very different based on the national context. For example, a person can say they are from
the United States not because of the power it has but because of pride of belonging to the nation
together with a common trait that they have that makes a person can easily say they are from the
United States, not Asia, Europe or Africa. In other words, a person from Ghana has very
different and distinct characters from a person from China or England. Therefore, as much as a
person saying that they are local, it is not wrong to say that they are from a particular nation in
some instances.
