University of California Learning in a Pandemic Portfolio Portfolio Reflection: Learning in a Pandemic (1250 words with multimodal elements)Please reflect on your experience with this course, and beyond that, the experience of learning during Covid-19. Some organizing questions/sections that you might consider and address in your Portfolio Reflection: 1. Learning about the pandemic: Please reflect on life during the Covid-19 pandemic. What is it like to read the news, to observe the impact on groups and individuals, and to feel the impact on your own lives, both immediately and in anticipation of future effects? What have you learned about the word “pandemic”? What have you learned about infections disease? What part of this has really made you think or rethink about the world–the past, the present and the future? 2. Learning with the pandemic: What has it been like to have “pandemic” on the mind while trying to study—at the beginning of the quarter? Midway through? Now? For this class? Other classes? In general? 3. 39C and the pandemic: What has it been like to do a research project in which you had to think about a real world problem, one happening right now? Have you thought about that problem existing in the context of the pandemic? Have you thought about how that problem you’ve thought about for all these weeks might be affected by the pandemic? What has it been like to do research for this project—choose, read, summarize, and analyze sources? Compose an argument? But perhaps most importantly advocate for implementable solutions? Anything else you would like to add about working on these projects during a pandemic?
You should also feel free—even encouraged!—to discuss any successes you feel that you’ve had with your writing this quarter, and to focus on those things that helped you learn, grow, and succeed in the writing, researching, and advocacy skills we’ve spent our time employing. But this is not the typical “progress narrative” Reflection: I am not looking for unbroken trajectories of success here, but a real-world contextualization of your work in 39C despite All Of This.
4. Fall term and the future: How do you feel about learning online for the fall term? What concerns do you have? Do you anticipate any major changes? As we continue to fight the pandemic, how are you anticipating or planning for your learning experience during fall term? Running head: PORTFOLIO REFLECTION

What was this quarter like for you?
Life, as we know, has significantly changed with the onset of the Coronavirus pandemic.
This quarter has been different from others in that society has been contained in their homes. Our
relationship with others has changed as we are always wearing masks and keeping social
distance. Besides, society has become used to washing hands to avoid contracting the virus that
has ravaged the world. Workplaces, along with public gathering spaces, have remained closed.
What appeared as mundane daily activities in the past raises uncomfortable feelings, such as
attending a crowded party. It is becoming a thing of the past, sharing a meal in a restaurant with
friends. Also, shopping for groceries with a close friend in the public spaces raises concern.
What did you learn in 39C?
I developed various skills in peer review and discussion posts while undertaking studies
in the food sustainability initiatives, first amendment, globalization, technology and politics,
cyberspace, mass incarceration, immigration, and housing such as research, critical thinking,
communication, & social and professional etiquette. I discovered how to locate, evaluate, extract,
utilize, and organize information relevant to different topics. It dealt with intensive research,
critical analysis to answer specific questions under study. During the investigation, I had to make
logical as well as informed decisions on the information that was important to the different
studies that I was undertaking. During lectures and discussions, I learned how to listen, take
notes, pick the essential concepts, and highlight the areas that I needed more clarification.
Moreover, when interacting with the lecturers and my peers, I developed social and professional
etiquette that helped improve my communication and created a mutually respectful atmosphere.
What helped you learn those skills?

From the different themes that we explored, such as the food sustainability initiatives, it
helped in understanding safety in the consumption of food, which assists in combating global
food insecurity. I learned that safety was paramount to food security globally and that low fossil
fuel is essential to protecting the ozone layer. In this case, food sustainability programs should
take cognizance of environmentally viable foods for enhancing productivity (CP). Thus, it
assisted in developing critical thinking and research skills.
Animal ethics was another area of great interest that contributed significantly to group
discussions and communication skills. I came to understand that it is vital for humans to treat
animals humanely to ensure continued survival in the environment, as it helps protect various
species of animals’ key to the ecosystem. Besides, the active involvement and attention to animal
ethics significantly affect domestic and global conditions in society and the environment. Hence,
the topic prompts humans to make conscious choices on what they eat and wear. Therefore,
without focusing on animal ethics, humankind may not consider the negative influence that
human behavior could have on the environment. Other concepts that increased my knowledge
include globalization, technology, and politics, cyberspace, mass incarceration, immigration, and
housing.
Describe how those assignments helped you build which specific skills from your list
In developing the skills, I encountered numerous challenges. While critically thinking of
topics such as animal ethics, I often became a victim of egocentric thinking as I viewed
everything in relation to myself. Most times, I considered my interests, which made it difficult to
sympathize with others or any differing perspectives. During group discussions, it was not easy
letting go of my views which I held so closely. On the other hand, I was a victim of groupthink,
which prevented me from embracing critical thinking. I was swayed by the opinions of others

such that I took their viewpoints. Most times, I had to step aside and evaluate my stands on
different issues. At times, I questioned my own beliefs and had to request for more time to reflect
on the issues we were discussing.
During these times, I felt frustrated as I was forced to go back to reading and to analyze
different texts and journals. As a result, I had numerous night vigils of research and analysis,
which helped much in developing not only social and professional skills but communication
skills as I had to eloquently put my points forward for the others to consider them. Therefore,
research and critical skills were highly developed. In the beginning, looking for information was
a toll order. However, after numerous discussions, my skills were developed, making it easy
looking for information on the internet and in the library. In the end, I became one critical
member of the group discussions as I always offered a differing point supported by considerable
research and knowledge. The skills I gained were vital as it helped me in my smaller and major
assignments since I employed the same skills that I developed.
