PS:We had a field trip to Chicano Park, you can take about that. https://www.sandiego.org/articles/parks-gardens/chicano-park.aspx Theme and approach:
This seminar will be concerned with institutions and practices of public exhibition and display. Weekly readings, screenings and discussion topics will address
historical and contemporary forms of display and their social, ethical, political and organizational dimensions. We will consider a range of examples including:
public art, monuments, exhibitions of artifacts, modes of commercial display (from store windows to billboards to runway), and the re-conceptualization of these
as digital forms. Participants will also visit exhibitions and other sites of display that we will discuss in seminar. While focusing attention on critical analysis of
practices of display as a site of research, the course will also consider alternative approaches to curatorial practice and engage participants in exploring exhibition
design and display strategies. The core assignment of the course is research and development of a component for an exhibition examining the theme of “Making
Publics” that will be installed in Geisel Library. Throughout the quarter we will be critically examining the role of visual and spatial practices in mediating shared
and contentious concerns.
In this class. I visited and learned a lot about the Chicano Park beneath the Coronado Bridge and I prepared a conceptual display about sustainable energy to be put up in Geisel Library. I learned the history and cultural
significance of the Park, as well as the controversy and politics that have been associated with the high crime rate in the past. But especially I tried to understand the significance of the murals and the value of the restoration
projects that have been ongoing. It has been interesting for me to learn about who decides what images are painted, and where, and when. It speaks to the power of street art and community politics.

group project for the exhibition.
2. Tell me the most significant things that you
learned throughout the quarter—or if there were
things you wished we had done.
By the end of taking this course, I really feel like I have achieved a lot and created something that will really make a difference on UCSD campus. As I reflect on my experience as graduating senior, Comm 190 has been the most hands-on
experience and I am truly grateful for it. Through my final project of showing the importance of renewable energy, I feel as though I contributed an important role in my group. I made sure that everything was orderly, made the layout of
our physical piece, and that all of our parts were ordered on time.
The most significant thing I learned from this quarter is that by creating something that is eye catching and out of the ordinary, there will be a much greater chance of getting people’s attention and making a difference.
1. Throughout this class, I’ve been able to take on different perspectives on how to view public spaces and have been able to understand the various ways of how people may define them. I honestly didn’t really know what to expect from this course as I’ve
never taken a seminar course before, so being able to be in a class setting that instead felt like a collaborative meeting was refreshing. It provided an opportunity for open dialogue, which in turns created a space for deeper analyzation about class materials
which helped me widen my range of contributions by being able to physically participate in order to offer my perspectives on different matters. For our group project, Casey and I chose to move forward with her initial project proposal which was the
