Discussion1:

Transformational leadership and full leadership commitment create the foundation needed for a good leader to implement a successful LEAN Six Sigma deployment. Transformational leadership style is about leading through change in a positive manner. A leader using this style does not micromanage their team, instead they work with them to inspire and motivate them. They lead them through the change by making it a positive outcome and vision that everyone wants to work to achieve. A transformational leader has the following characteristics:

Motivational with a positive attitude
Has values, standards, priorities, and morals that are ethical and encourage others
Values cooperation and communication within a team
Leads, teaches, and mentors while allowing others to take responsibility

These characteristics allow for a leader to set an example and help others along the path during the change. They help others to see the final vision while teaching and encouraging them to make the change. This leader also allows for everyone to take responsibility for their work and actions while motivating them to improve and mentor them on how to.

A full leadership commitment is needed when working towards six sigma quality in excellence. This commitment requires leaders to sacrifice short term benefits so that they can focus on the quality and service to their customers. It takes this commitment of a leader or group of leaders to reach achievements in their industry as it shows dedication and determination. This shows how committed the leader is to their role and their responsibilities and leads to continuous improvements.

Combining full leadership commitment and transformational leadership gives the team a very committed leader that will help the team through whatever changes or obstacles come their way. The commitment shown will attract the team as it shows how dedicated they are to the vision. This commitment is also what allows the leader to be there for the team when needed and make them feel supported. Along with the characteristics of a transformational leader it will be easy to create a team that is ready for anything. Strong communication, motivation, mentorship, and encouragement from a committed leader creates a committed and positive team. This foundation is required when working towards a LEAN Six Sigma deployment, as this leader will be able to guide them through from start to finish without feeling any negative impact or stress from the situation.

Discussion 2:

Lean Six Sigma is a process or methodology used as a tool for improvement and eliminating problems or reducing variations. The deployment of this process depends on effective leadership for a successful implementation. There are numerous reasons which support the claim that full commitment and transformational leadership are the foundation stones for LEAN Six Sigma deployment. This process has proved to be a business model in the organizational process but depends on numerous factors for strategic and effective implementation. Regarding the above, this paper brief will discuss reasons supporting the claim that full commitment and transformational leadership are foundation stones for efficient process deployment. However, it is vital to comprehend that this process depends on collaborative teamwork for efficiency. On the other hand, transformational leadership is defined as technical leadership that depends on team works to certify change through intellectual stimulation. Therefore, it means that transformational leadership is a foundation stone for effective Lean Six Sigma deployment in organizations. Transformational management’s four components are idealized influence, individualized consideration, inspirational motivation, and intellectual stimulation, enhancing quality and workflow improvements. Hence, it is yet another reason why this component is a foundation stone for a successful Lean Six Sigma implementation. Furtherly, the placement of Lean Six Sigma depends on leadership skills to develop vision, competitive advantage, and drive employee satisfaction or motivation. These three aspects can only be achieved through effective leadership, which is acquired from full leadership commitment and transformational leadership. These two foundation stones can create leadership development processes that drive employee satisfaction and motivation. By doing this, it is easier to understand if the process or methodology will be a successful one or not. Again, transformational leadership helps in developing motivation in the team during the implementation, which creates positivity; hence it is easier to establish success. Therefore, the integration of transformational and full leadership commitment proves to be crucial components in the implementation of Lean Six Sigma in organizations. The most important foundation stones for successful implementation of Lean Six Sigma are transformational and full leadership commitment. The main reason for this argument is that the elements of this leadership integrate efficiently with Lean Six Sigma principles. Likewise, they are familiar with the five most recurrent challenges that face it during the deployment process. Conclusively, these are the main reasons why leadership is a crucial element for the deployment of LEAN Six Sigma.

Discussion 3:

In “Transformational Leadership And Organizational Culture”, Bernard M. Bass and Bruce J. Avolio explained the 4 types of transformational leadership: idealized influence, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation, and individualized consideration. Transformational leaders have manifest a sign of purpose and influence; they motivate people to set a goal and achieve it. They teach others to carve their own pathways to success and give them space and time for their individual growth. Thus, they motivate a person towards self-improvement and development to their full potential. Lean itself has been defined as “A lean enterprise fosters a company culture in which all employees continually improve their skill levels and production processes” in The Lean Enterprise by Richard L. MacInnes. Thus, transformational leaders drive people to self improve continually, just like Lean Six Sigma. Transformational leaders also make sure to clearly communicate and take charge of change when necessary, as required by Lean Six Sigma which requires a set clear goal and assigns authoritative roles and solutions clearly. A transformational leader motivates his followers to be creative and innovative, thus being able to solve difficult problems with innovative solutions. Similar to how for LSS, proper solutions need to be found by a well-calculated, studied method. The transformational leader also provides individual care to each follower, thus helping each of them make their own necessary individual development. For LSS, a boundary has to be set, within which a problem is handled. Individual care is given to each section of a company or division for the betterment of the process. Full Leadership commitment includes a mix of transactional and transformational leadership. Transactional leadership occurs when the leader and the follower have a “complete contractual relationship” as described in “Transformational Leadership And Organizational Culture” by Bass and Avolio. There are contracts of employment, discipline, authority, rank and worth. For a successful LSS deployment, both transformational and full leadership commitment is necessary because LSS requires full effort, no waste mentality, with no scopes to create any discrepancies. It aims for continuous improvement where a set goal and motivation is needed to drive employees to reach their full potential, thus driving the company towards success. But it also requires a contract for an employee to be influenced to do better, thus the contract of employment and discipline to maintain the authoritative lead.
