Proposal feedback from my professor:
This is an interesting topic and one that has a lot of potential impacts! One point of feedback is that you can add specificity around your hypotheses. When you are talking about the individual statements, be more specific and talk about what are the exact measures that you will be looking at. This will help tremendously later on when you are gathering the data to do the analysis. For example, in Hypothesis 1, you mention that increasing homelessness will lead to slower economic growth. What are your measures of economic growth? Will it be GDP or real GDP or CPI? Are you going to look at this from a nationwide perspective or states or cities? In Hypothesis 2, you can be a lot more specific on how the tapping of skills will work and what are the empiric measures of that – what are the data that you can collect that show there is an increase in tapping the skills of the homeless. That directly leads into your methodology when you say that you will be doing primary research using focus groups. How is data from focus groups going to be used in analysis? Generally focus groups is good at providing feedback on ideas or policies but they don’t generate enough volume to be used in data analysis so that’s something that I think you can make clearer. Overall a very interesting idea but you can add more specificity around the hypotheses. IMPACT OF THE HOMELESS POPULATION ON THE ECONOMIC GROWTH OF
THE UNITED STATES
My research aims to determine the impact that the homeless population has on the
economic growth of the US. My study will, however, focus on the state of California. According
to the 2019 statistics on the state of homelessness in the US, California recorded an increase in
the number of the homeless population. From the report, California recorded an increase of 21,
306 people in the said year. This increase was a 16% rise making the total number of the
homeless population to 151 000. According to the department of urban and housing
development, the increase in homeless people could be due to the rise in the cost of housing,
especially on the West Coast. To address the crisis, the governor of California proposed an
increase of about $ 750 million to the previous budget allocation for the homeless population.
Additionally, Newsom also added $695 million for the expansion of homeless services (Terrant,
2020). These allocations, however, minimal compared to the economic state of California, are
more likely to impact the economic growth of the country to some extent.
Hypothesis.
•
An increase in the homeless population is likely to slow the economic growth of
the US.
To justify my hypothesis, I will use the real GDP as a determinant for economic growth. I
have chosen the real GDP as it projects economic growth, which is measured at a constant price.
I will consider the government’s expenditures on non-investments activities such as reliefs and
emergency responses to the crisis, such as homelessness.
•
The tapping of skills from the unemployed, homeless population will enhance the
economic growth of the country.
The majority of the homeless populations are unemployed or are at risk of being laid off
in case of an economic crisis. When thee employees are laid off, they are most likely to end in
the streets. Additionally, with the increase in the cost of living and constant wages, most families
are unlikely to afford rents and therefore, will consider the roads as an option. However, a
positive shift in the employment status is a clear indication that the majority of the people are
getting off the streets. When many people are employed, the government spends less on
assistance, and the employees also contribute positively to the economy. To address this
hypothesis, I will use the unemployment rate data from the state’s department. This information
will help in the analysis of how the increase in employment rates impact economic growth for
over ten years.
Additionally, I will consider the data on consumer spending. Consumer spending is an
indicator of consumer health, which in turn reflects a growing economy. Similarly, with
consumer spending, we are also able to determine inflation rates, which is a significant concern
in economic growth.
To complete this study, I will use secondary sources of information, including previous
studies and data from the various state departments. The publicly available data will help me
come up with the data required to complete my analysis. My comparison will include data for the
past ten years. These statistics will increase the reliability and validity of the study.

Capstone project:
To put it simply: you are going to come up with a hypothesis, find data to test it, and present your
results in the form of a presentation and a paper:

Impact of the Homeless Population on the Economic Growth of the United States
INTRODUCTION
Homelessness is the state where one is living in a house that is below the minimum
standards, or they lack a secure tenure. Different categories of homelessness exist ranging from
primary homelessness (people living in the streets), secondary homelessness (moving between
temporary shelters), and chronic homelessness (those who have been on the roads for over 30
years) (Cutts et al., 2018). The definition of homelessness varies from country to country. In the
US, for example, people who use public or private places not designed for sleeping
accommodation are homeless.
Homelessness has become a significant concern over the years pushing researchers to
conduct more studies over the years. Current studies illustrate the causes of homelessness and the
impact on the homeless population. My proposal, however, seeks to determine the effect that the
homeless people have on the economic growth of the United States. The homeless population
survives in challenging conditions and are susceptible to lots of health-related complications. In
addition to the difficulties, this group of people is more likely to engage in crimes and drug abuse
((Taylor & Walsh, 2018).
The United States, on the other hand, is committed to ensuring the wellbeing of these
homeless populations. The government has developed several programs such as shelter homes,
health insurance coverage, and even plans of transitioning the homeless to permanent residence.
These programs, however, require lots of funds. In the 2019 fiscal year, for instance, the
government allocated a budget of $2,636 billion to facilitate these programs. However, with the
increasing trend of homelessness, the budget is even likely to increase over the year.

Hypothesis
Because of the need for support that the homeless population continuously requires, the
government will continue directing lots of funds to this nonproductive population. My hypothesis
are:
➢ An increase in the homeless population is likely to slow the economic growth of the US.
➢ The tapping of skills from the unemployed, homeless population will enhance the
economic growth of the country.
METHODOLOGY
To obtain data for the study, I will utilize both secondary and primary data sources. For the
secondary data sources, I will use the publicly available data from the government. The data will
include yearly expenditure on homeless programs for the past ten years. I will also obtain data on
the scale of economic growth of the country for the past ten years. I will also analyze indicators of
economic growth and factors hindering economic growth. With the data, I will be able to determine
which factors facilitate or affect economic growth and to what extent. To obtain primary data, I
will use focused groups, including finance departments, program managers, and even economists,
if possible.
DATA ANALYSIS
To determine the relationship between expenditure on homeless programs and economic
growth, I will apply the nonlinear regression model. This model will help me understand how the
two variables correlate, thereby proving or disapproving my first hypothesis. In the second
hypothesis, I will apply the multiple regression model. The application of the model will help in
