Recommendation: explore a country you are interested in and thinking about potentially recommending for your
team’s expatriate packet.
You should look at websites such as the US State Department, national corruption indices, tourist Youtube videos
etc. for information that might be useful for both the ESE and, subsequently, the Expatriate packet.
Reminder, this is a challenging time-consuming assignment, so start working on it early. Be sure to follow the ESE
instructions. You are also welcome to examine the PDF attachment below that features examples of previous
ESEs. NOTE that most of these examples have three countries highlighted. You are only required to analyze one
(1).
Note: To help manage the workload of this course, your Environmental Scanning Exercise is
to choose one (1) country even though the examples contain three. Those examples are
intentionally dated (so they should not be copied) and come from a time when the profile of
course assignments was different. For this assignment, I prefer you have time to enjoy going
into some depth and breadth on each of the environmental dimensions rather than scurrying
around trying to find information on three countries.

ENVIRONMENTAL SCANNING EXERCISEs are Graded
Preliminary Observation:
The importance of the ESE is to prepare members of this class for the important Expat Package
assignment and HR careers. Before commenting on the posted ESEs, please consider the following
assertion:
Americans generally are not knowledgeable of what is happening outside their own country, not even
global geography. Watch the video below and take the 20 question quiz to see where you are
weak/strong:
https://matadornetwork.com/read/americans-fail-identify-single-country-jimmy-kimmel-clip/
There is also a knowledge gap about international affairs. Heres an interesting National Geographic
article from 2016 that is still relevant today:
https://news.nationalgeographic.com/2016/09/survey-geography-foreign-relations-americansstudents/
Hope you will try the quiz, though, a few facts may have changed in the past three years. What I found
while teaching/lecturing at universities outside the US was that my international students were
generally more knowledgeable of international affairs than most of the thousands of US students I have
taught. Often, they were even more aware of US history, geography, literature and culture.
Consider the implications for HR. When expats are sent abroad from US parent companies, especially for
the first time, it is safe for HR to assume they and/or their family need to be brought up to speed on
international affairs, particularly information about the region, country and city where they are headed.
Comments:
The quality of work reflected in the ESEs ranged from excellent to poor. A number were superior
examples of graduate level work. Many, however, did not have current information on the
environmental factors of their selected country and industry. This is the question I hoped you were
thinking of as you wrote up the assignment: If I were being sent by my employer to this new
international assignment, based on this paper how well informed would I be about the environment in
which I and my family will be living and working?
Keep that question in mind as you and your team prepare your Expat Package.
I hope you found this exercise as interesting and informative as I did. There is much room for personal
growth and development in this dynamic area of HR.
Finally, if you were disappointed in the quality of your work/grade on this assignment, adjust the rigor
and scope of your work going forward. When assigning final grades, I am most interested in grade trends
and reward progress.
