1) The Mursi woman talks about what she thinks is beautiful, which among other things involves removing her eyelashes and undergoing other facial modifications. Many Europeans and North Americans would not necessarily find these things beautiful. How do you explain those differences in perspective?

2) What do you think brings Europeans to this remote village? What are they looking for and seeking to do?

3) Now that tourists come, the Mursi woman explains, they have new ways of dressing up and they have invented certain decorations “just for show.” What do you think this says about Mursi attitudes toward tourists? Do you think the Mursi show the Europeans their “authentic” culture?

4) The Mursi are aware of what tourists want to see and photograph, and they prepare things specifically for that purpose. Do you think these processes are destructive or exploitative of Mursi culture? Why doesn’t the Mursi woman care if she wears something “fake” for tourists?

1. “Making the Familiar Strange” Activity

A frequently cited goal of cultural anthropology is to make the strange familiar and the familiar strange. This activity is designed to introduce that concept and encourage students to look at your home culture from an outsider’s perspective.

Conduct twenty-four hours of “fieldwork” in your own culture—on campus, or at home if you commute, or at your job—as if this was your first day in a strange new land. Record observations with as much objectivity and detail as possible, no matter how familiar or mundane.
After taking notes for a day, review your field notes and identify observations and patterns in the familiar that might seem strange to someone from another cultural context.
