Paper 2: The Actor or The Director (150 points)
For this assignment you must see a recorded version of a LIVE theatre performance of a play
within this quarter. The play should be a minimum of one hour long, filmed in front of a live
audience, and can not be a children’s theatre or high school production.
If you have questions about what is appropriate, contact me through the private messages section of
the CANVAS site. Each choice, (Topic A or Topic B), requires responses to specified questions based
on your play attendance.
Second Paper Guidelines:
1. For this paper you will need to see a live performance of a play within this quarter. You can go to
the suggested list of local (Bay Area) plays to see some recommendations for this quarter. See
“What’s Playing” in the Resources section. If you are located elsewhere, you will need to explore
your area and see what is playing locally to you.

(And you can check with Goldstar (https://www.goldstar.com)
for discounted tickets on many of the shows in many areas, if you’d like.)
The focus of your paper will be either the Actor, or the Director and the Artistic Vision.
Detailed instructions for each topic are below.
Before you write, please read the directions carefully and follow them exactly.
Please maintain the order of questions with your responses, but write in essay format. Be sure to
review the requirements for written work in the syllabus before you write your response.
Once you have chosen your topic, compose your paper in a word processing program, then go to
“Submit Assignment” and upload your file as a .doc, .docx, or .pdf.
Reminder, run a spelling and grammar check before you submit. And don’t forget, referencing a
play is a proper title and needs to either italicized or underlined, not in quotation marks.
And a reminder to read chapter 5 of the Theatre Brief text before setting out to write this

assignment.
8. Remember also to make sure your choice fits within the course criteria for seeing a live show
found both in the syllabus as well as in Play Attendance in Module #1
Stylistically, please remember a few things:
1. Make sure you underline or italicize play titles (not quotations marks) whenever you reference the
play’s title.
2. If you reference an actor, director or designer, include their character or function and then full
name in your first reference. Last name only in subsequent references.
3. Remember you can only speak for your experience, not the entire audience. You cannot validly
claim, “The audience felt sympathy.” You can’t possibly know that. You can claim, “Most of the
audience erupted into a standing ovation.” That’s a factual statement that you witnessed.
This paper is worth 150 points
500 word minimum (word count does not include performance information)
Late work will receive partial credit.

Paper 2 Instructions: The Actor or The Director (150
points)
For this assignment you must see a LIVE theatre performance of a play this quarter.
Choose Topic A (The Actor) or Topic B (The Director). Each choice requires a response to separate
questions based on your play attendance.
Topic Choice A: The Actor
Question 1 requires simple information only. Then choose an option below and proceed to address
all three questions in that section.
1. Performance information:
a. Name of play and playwright
b. Producing organization (theatre company)
c. Venue (name of the building/theatre where the performance took place) and city

Paper 2: Acting or Directing

d. Date of performance you attended
e. Director’s name
f. For Musicals: Composer and lyricist
2. Based on the readings in the module and Cohen, chapter 3, respond in detail to the three parts
in ONE of the following options for your essay:
One Successful Actor Option — Write about the performance of one actor you liked very much.
a. What did that actor do to convince you, and why, in your opinion, was this a good performance?
b. How did the actor use his/her voice, body and imagination to capture the character?
c. What, if anything, might have made the performance even better?
(Review the discussion of acting in the module and textbook to help you fill in the details.)
OR…
Contrast Two Actors Option
Compare one actor who seemed very effective with one who was less so in the same play. Use all of
the items listed above.
OR…
Compare Two Successful Actors Option
Compare two actors who were effective but very different in their work in the play. How did they
compliment each other? How were they different or contrasted? Again, look at the elements above.
OR…
One Actor Transformation Option
d. Write about how one actor showed his character changing greatly in the course of the play. What
did the actor do to show this transformation? (Again, consider the discussion of acting in the
classroom and textbook to inform your answer, and pay attention to the elements above).
Your paper should be a minimum of FIVE hundred (500) words not including the play
information in question 1.
Topic Choice B: The Director and the Artistic Vision
Question 1 requires simple information only. Then proceed to answer all three remaining sections.
1.Performance Information:
a. Name of play and playwright

Paper 2: Acting or Directing

b. Producing organization
c. Venue (name of the building/theatre where the performance took place)
d. Date of performance you attended
e. Director’s name
f. For Musicals: Composer and lyricist
2. The Artistic Vision: When a Director chooses to create a production of a particular play
they are in charge with what is called the “artistic vision’ of the production. One element of this is to
decide what is important about the play – why is it being done? What kind of message or lesson will
this play teach the audience? What do you think the message was for the play you saw? What
moments stood out as being crucial to conveying the director’s “vision”.
3. Design Elements: Part of the “artistic vision” is to see that it is implemented across all areas of the
acting and design of the production. This means that if the play is set in rural America in 1931, the
physical characteristics of the stage decor should reinforce that location. Did the design elements fit
together? Did they create a “world” in which the play could take place? Was anything out of place?
How did the design elements support each other? Did the actors fit in to the world?
4. Point of View: In the theatre, the director is responsible for what we call staging the play. This
refers to sorting out how the actors are arranged on stage at any given moment and how they move
from place to place. This helps the audience decide whom to watch at any moment. Were there
places during the play where the director created a particularly striking or interesting picture or focus?
Try and describe at least one of these moments; what was happening in the play at that time, why did
you remember it, how were the actors arranged, what design elements contributed to this moment?
How did this moment contribute to your understanding of the story or character relationships?
Your paper should be a minimum of FIVE hundred (500) words not including the play
information in question 1.
