(This is in fact often the case, especially for short papers.) o   Tip: Remember, you are not writing for “you.” You are writing for your readers. This is why a clear orientation to the topic and a concise thesis statement is so important. Body: 20 pts (1.5 pages) Background (½ pg, 5 pts) ·      Clearly and cogently describe the history of the theory or model, using proper citations of source material.  (Cogent: adj. Appealing to the intellect or powers of reasoning; convincing) Some ideas: Who were the “founding mothers or fathers,” so to speak? How did the theory evolve over time? What “holes” does the theory fill (that is, what new information does it provide that other theories did not)? YOU need to decide how to best organize this section in a way that “brings the reader with you” step-by-step. The background must be well-organized and easy for a reader to follow along with the writer’s train of thought. This should not be a running monologue of thoughts separated by hard-returns and an indent.   Key Components (1 pg, 15 pts) ·      Begins with an overall description of the theory or model. (Kind of like an “extension of the introduction.”) ·      Then, clearly and cogently describe key components of the theory or model, using proper citations of source material. What elements are most important to understand? Describe them.  (Cogent: adj. Appealing to the intellect or powers of reasoning; convincing) Be selective, because you only have so much space. You have one page to allow the reader to have at least a summary understanding of the theory or model. So, pick out some key points or concepts that comprise the theory or model, and describe them in a way that an educated reader would understand. YOU need to decide how to best organize this section in a way that “brings the reader with you” step-by-step. Transitional sentences when shifting to a new main idea are always helpful for organization and clarity. ·      The Key Components must be well-organized and easy for a reader to follow along with the writer’s train of thought. This should not be a running monologue of thoughts separated by hard-returns and an indent. Conclusion: 4 pts (1 short paragraph, about 4 sentences) ·      Serves the purpose of a proper essay conclusion. Clearly yet efficiently summarizes the background and key components. Does not bring in “new information.”
