Kate Chopin “The Story of an Hour (Links to an external site.)” Understanding that Brently Mallard did not physically abuse his wife, and noting that they both loved each other, why do you believe that she died when she saw that he was alive, and not when she believed that he had died? (hint: what was her definition of marriage?)

Toni Cade Bambara “Those Bones are Not My Child (Links to an external site.)” This excerpt from Bambara’s novel is based on a true incident of a mass murder in Atlanta. Reviewer Sven Birkerts asserts about Bambara’s writing: “Until the whole truth — the complete system of interlinked facts — is known, a terrible ache must remain. When people are still missing, or their murders remain unsolved, true grieving is not possible. Bambara’s achievement — in this masterly if not yet fully balanced work — is to voice this sense of loss, to give full human dimension to events that for too many of us flashed by like billboards at highway speed.” Do you agree with Birkerts’ assessment of Bambara’s accomplishment about “voicing the sense of loss” in this story?
