Fighting racism and demanding equality in the justice system
On one hand we must protect all civilians from racist or overly brutal officers
On the other hand, we must protect the lives of our officers and allow them to make
decisions that would save their lives
1. Introduction
a. Topics of race charge many of the conversations had in the political arena even today, over 50
after Martin Luther King Jr., the black panthers, Malcom X, and all the others that represented
the civil rights movement.
b. The animosity between whites and blacks still exists over half a decade later and has
continuously been an issue in politics and especially the justice system.
c. Well known problems such as the “Black Tax”, disproportionate ratios of blacks to whites in
jail, and specific cases such as the Rodney King case and the Central Park five have not been
fixed or forgotten which causes an even deeper divide and lack of trust between races.
d. Every day our officers go to work knowing that their lives are at risk. There is a movement
now called Blue Lives Matter which has countered the Black Lives Matter movement since
many members believe that police should have precedence in dangerous situations.
e. Both the Black and Blue Lives matter movements stem from this increased animosity and
distrust between our black community and the officers due to cases of brutality against black
civilians such as the Walter Scott case in Charleston, South Carolina in 2015.
2. The Walter Scott Case: Background
a. With growing technology we are now able to record anything that is done or said between a
civilian and an officer. Although this is only a snapshot of what happened, this does give the
public and our governing bodies evidence to cases which is exactly what happened in the Walter
Scott case.
b. I remember seeing this video when I was first becoming aware of the Black Lives Matter
movement. I remember thinking, “ This is terrible…how could they shoot him eight times in the
back running away like that?”. This video went viral and stirred up intense emotions in both the
white and black community, because it provided hard evidence of what police brutality and
racial injustice means in our neighborhoods today.
c. Although Scott was reaching for the officerÂ’s weapon (a taser), he ended up not being able to
get it and turned with his back to Slager and ran away. The general public would agree that
Slager was threatened until Scott turned from him and fled. Slager shot an unarmed man eight
times in the back while he was running away from him. I also think the general public would
agree that Scott was a potentially dangerous individual that needed to be detained, but they were
not okay with Slager shooting him eight times and ending his life.
3. The Case: What happened to Slager
4. The Black Lives and Blue Lives Matter Movements
5. The public eye and how the increased public scrutiny is changing officer training and their
work environment
