Both “The Management of Grief” and “The Garden of Forking Paths” involve keys scenes of hospitality, in which a host invites a guest into their home. The repercussions of these scenes, however, are very different. When you compare these texts, what sort of power dynamic exists between host and guest in each story? Is the home a welcoming or threatening site? What symbolic meaning might the “home” setting accrue as the story progresses?
