The attitude toward to the government role in morden society by Adam Smith

The paper must have a substantial focus on economic thought.  (This means it could be focusing on a particular thinker, or it could be a particular idea where you compare and contrast a couple of thinkers.)

Adam Smith would not have supported contemporary extreme libertarian positions (such as anarcho-capitalism), which argue that government’s role should be miniscule.  According to Smith, what were the appropriate uses of state power?  Given his positions in moral philosophy and economic theory, justify a position of what Adam Smith may have thought if he lived in modern times.
