Teaching Resource on complex medications and medication regimens safely in the home setting

Guidelines for Teaching Resource

Today’s health care environment mandates that the client be an active participant in his/her own health management.  Effective management of a therapeutic drug regimen, whether prescribed for a short-term illness or a chronic condition, requires a major commitment by the client and/or family. A well-planned teaching program is needed to provide the information to the client so that he/she can self-manage complex medications and medication regimens safely in the home setting. The client must also be prepared to recognize and report early signs and symptoms of adverse reactions to prevent complications. Therefore, the nurse needs to be not only knowledgeable in pharmacologic content but also skilled in client education.
