Book: Painter, Sidney. Mediaeval Society. Ithaca and London: Cornell University Press, 1951.

Your assignment is to read carefully the Painter book. After you have read the book, write an essay of 1000 words or less (certainly not more) explaining the “stupendous achievement” of the late medieval period and in what ways things were better in 1300 A.D. than in 1000 A.D.

To get a good grade, you must adhere to those standards, and to the following:

1. Everything that does not come from your own original personal knowledge requires a reference. Since none of you are economic historians, you will need to cite a source for virtually every sentence or paragraph that you write.

2. We will use parenthetical references to identify sources, for example, (Painter, 99), that is, the name of the author followed by the page on which your citation appears, all in parentheses. This should not be difficult because you have all the books and papers cited in the assignments.

3. Every direct quotation must appear in quotation marks and have a parenthetical citation immediately following the closing quotation mark.
