Ohm’s Laws
Adjustment of Experiment
By and large, Parts, 1 and 2 of the procedure have been omitted. Part 1 seeks to give the
students some familiarity with different types of fuses and how they are rated. Part 2 aims to
demonstrate why the 30-Volt (maximum) power supply voltage poses no shock hazard.
Typically, measurements show that dry skin has an electrical resistance of 100 KOhms to 300
KOhms, even for two points just separated by 2 or 3 cm. Ohm’s Law calculate a maximum
current through that skin of I = V / R = 30 Volts / 100 KOhms or 30 / 300 KOhms. These
small amounts of current (300 micro-Amps or 1 micro-Amp) are below the threshold of even
mild sensation for most people.
The first 6 minutes of this YouTube video replace Part 1.

Sequence in Which to View Image and Video Files
View the static images and video clips in the following numerical order given by filename.
Create a table that lists each file name and a brief description of what is being displayed. In the
description, include the Part number and procedure number from the lab manual. The first
entry in the table is provided as an example.

The video in 04_10.mp4 is of a procedure not found in the lab manual. Answer this extra
question in your discussion section. Why does the bulb in the upper left of the circuit go out
when the ammeter is connected?
Also in 04_13.jpg, state what value the resistance substitution box is set to.

Part 5 – Circuit Building Simulations
Since Parts 1 and 2 have been eliminated, include this new Part 5 in your Data Analysis. Run
the following HTML 5 simulation from the PhET project produced by the University of
Colorado.

1) After clicking on the above link, build two circuits. One with only series OR parallel circuit
elements and one that mix series AND parallel branches. Use the tools provided to annotate
fully. This procedure has been kept vague intentionally to allow for some creativity.
2) Make screen captures of your two simulations and include them in the data analysis section
of your report. Discuss the physics behind your simulations in the discussion section.
