SPE101 Promotion of Gender Equality in Society Persuasive Speech Persuasive Speech
Time: 7-9 minutes per person
Objective: Your role in this presentation is that of the advocate for or against an issue of social justice, or to call the audience to action to change the policy.
Topic: Select a topic that is relevant, challenging and interesting. Good places to look for persuasive topics are any parenting magazines, news magazines, environmental magazines, etc.
The speech should address a question of inequality and oppression as defined in social justice. Be certain that your appeal is not based on a question of fact or a question of value. You must establish a need (problem), provide a plan (solution), and demonstrate the practicality of the plan (solution). Watch the sample speeches to help your understanding of how you put this together.
Avoid very broad issues and value arguments that are impossible to advocate for or against in 9 minutes. Remember, if we are not convinced, we have not been persuaded.
Format: Extemporaneous. You may use a speaking outline with keywords. Rehearse this speech well. Do not read aloud.
Persuasive speeches use a specific organizational format. You may use a problem – cause solution or problem – solution approach, or you may use Monroe’s Motivated Sequence. In either case, you will prepare an argument that conforms with the formats outlined in the handouts, in the book and covered in class.
Emphasis:
On effective use of all parts of a presentation, especially the introduction and conclusion.
On effective organization, including outlining and sufficient support.
On continuing development of effective and dynamic delivery.
On sophisticated crafting of language for persuasive purposes.
On employing effective and ethical methods of persuasion.
On using credibility, rational argument, and ethical emotional appeal.
Outline: A typed formal preparation outline will be handed in before your speaking day as directed by the instructor. Please use all the proper headings and formats. If the outline is not prepared by the designated date, the presentation will receive a full grade reduction. Bring 2 copies of your speaking outline (with a final bib) to hand in on the day of your speech.
Sources: You must gather information for your speech from at least 5 credible sources. These sources will appear in a typed bibliography in MLA or APA format. The sources must be somewhat current, nothing published before 2014. When you use information or quotations from these sources in your speech, you must cite them during your speech.
