Southern New Hampshire University Popular Culture and History Paper Over the past two weeks, our readings and discussions have been focused on establishing a baseline for understanding popular culture. In this module, we’ll begin our tour through the four lenses, beginning with history. As we dive into the four lenses, keep in mind that each lens is framed as a way of seeing the world around us and is not necessarily tied to the associated discipline. So, looking through the historical lens isn’t just about History Channel documentaries—it’s also about how you use the lens to understand the past and present. As you write your initial post, answer the following questions:
In what ways does looking through the history lens enhance your understanding of popular culture?
Consider a current event in the news that portrays a historical element. How does looking through the history lens influence how you perceive both the current and historical cultures referenced? Please share a news link to your event.
How does analyzing the relationship between history, culture, and popular culture have an influence on your discipline of study or chosen profession?
Respond to at least two of your classmates. Compare and contrast your answers to further everyone’s understanding of popular culture and the lens of history.
Make sure you support your response with the readings from this module and any additional resources if needed. Response to lindsay
Looking at aspects of pop culture through the history lens helps me understand all that took place in order
for things to be as they are today. For example, in order for there to be smartphones and tablets, there
needed to be flip phones, corded phones, and telegrams. Everything we encounter today is because of a
series of events that took place in the past. Understanding the history of something helps to appreciate
the journey of how something came to be, which can also give insight in how to proceed in the future.
It is hard to think of any current event today that doesn’t revolve around COVID-19 or BLM. With that
said, I thought I would talk about a recent event that is somewhat different, but also related to BLM in
some way. Recently, Hamilton, a popular Broadway show featuring the life of Alexander Hamilton with a
blend of rap, hip-hop, and pop music, has been receiving renewed backlash over the shows depiction of
the Founding Fathers. “The founders are obviously important figures, but most of them were salve
owners, and some observers criticize the show for the glorification of these flawed historical figures while
ignoring their inherent racism” (Figueroa 2020). Miranda, the creator of the show, has acknowledged
these criticisms as valid, and he understands where they come from. However, in defense of the show, it
is a drama rooted in history, but not an accurate depiction of the true nature of any of the characters.
Miranda has done a great job purposefully casting the founding fathers to be played by people of color in
order to bring representation in the entertainment industry and also modernize and reclaim the story as a
celebration of our country’s diversity. With his show being added to Disney+, talk about the true history of
the Founding Fathers has become easier, as the story is now being more accessible than ever. By
looking at the story of Hamilton and the Founding Father’s through the history lens, we can see that
America was founded by flawed and racist men. However, they did build a country that would eventually
encourage people of all faiths, religions, and ethnicities to be able to find freedom and pursue their own
happiness. By looking at all of the facts, and thinking about culture today, I can see a lot of both good and
bad that has come out of the actions of the Founding Fathers. America has a dark history; one that we
are still healing from and navigating in how to proceed. We can’t change the past, but we can learn from
it, and let it help us to navigate the future.

I am studying to be a photographer and hope to work in editorial and fine art photography. Understanding
the history of photography, especially the darkroom process, helps me to better understand how to
visualize and edit my images. Understanding the relationship light plays in photography is crucial, which
can only be truly appreciated if one understands the roots of photography. Pop culture is also highly
important in the photography business. With smartphone photography on the rise, and social media
taking charge in the marketing world, I have to know what is popular in order to market myself accordingly
and set myself apart from the competition.

By having a better understanding of the history lens helps to enhance my understanding of popular
culture. It helps me to better understand happened in the past , what led up to why it is or is not around
today and how that past affect the future within the realm of popular culture. I always used to think that
popular culture was just based off of the current fads or the most popular trends, fashion, art , music etc. I
never really though of any artifact now a days to really have a historical view or outlook on it. It makes
sense that all these artifact have some sort of history to them, whether its new or old everything has some
sort of history on it … even if its a “newer” artifact.
Right now it the news there is so much going on in the United States it overwhelming. Without getting too
much into politics or a racial issues going on but i want to touch base on something. The BLM movement
is huge and along with this movement brought attention to Juneteenth. There are many people who want
to recognized as a national holiday due to the fact that many people within the United States on July 4th ,
1776 were NOT independent or free Americans… some of the black Americans in this country were not
free , there were still slaves at the time of . “Juneneenth is the oldest country-wide celebrated
commemoration of the ending of slavery in the U.S., according to Juneteenth.com. Although celebrations
declined in the early 1900s due to the Great Depression and curriculums omitting any mention the
holiday, Juneteenth made a resurgence in 1968 during the Civil Rights Movement (Ward & Macartney
2020). Looking at this issue through the historical lens helped me to relearn the history that lead up to
what Juneteenth is and what it represents to the black Americans within this country . This lens helps to
explain how and why this happens and why this deserves to be celebrated as a day of freedom as well. I
myself am a Latina who has black also mixed into her heritage and culture who feels this is so very
important for us tackle and appreciate the freedoms of our fellow Americans who were enslaved. I think
that this topic of making this a national holiday can help mixed, yellow, brown and black Americans to
have a day that represents freedom to them just like some of there other fellow Americans. Analyzing the
relationship between history, culture, and popular culture definitely plays a role in how i do my job without
crossing any lines to offend, disrespect or degrade another person. Working in the healthcare field there
are going to be so many people that i will come across who are different that me in ways. By really taking
in our history , the culture of the area or the person that i am working with at the time and how to really
make sure that i am professional and respectful and make sure that my job comes first not my personal
views and let those affect how i do my job is how i think this influences me .
