Description
This is an informative speech that provides background on an event that occurred
on your birthday and the long-lasting impact that event had on society. Note: the
event does not have to be from the same year you were born, only the same month
and day. You should only use someone’s birth as a last resort. Events do not have to
be well-known, just well researched and supported.
Main Points
For main point one, you should include a brief, but detailed description of the event
that occurred. For main point two, you should explain how that event shaped,
influenced, or affected modern society.
Speech Requirements For this speech, you are required to:
! Create and submit a preparation outline with a complete bibliography
! Create and use a speaking outline for extemporaneous delivery (one page or
two note card maximum)
! Cite sources orally in delivery of the speech and in writing in the preparation
outline and bibliography
! Use at least three quality sources
o You cannot cite Wikipedia, a search engine, a dictionary, or an
encyclopedia.
o In most cases, websites ending in .com are also off limits.
o If you think you have found a quality .com website, check with me.
! Speak for 4:30 minutes (4:00-5:00)
o If your speech is less than three minutes, you will lose five points from
your speech.
o If you are still speaking at five and a half minutes, the timer will ring,
applause will occur, and you will be graded on the portion of the
speech that you completed up to the five and a half minute mark.
Speech Day Procedures
! For audience members and speakers: be prepared to provide one peer evaluation for
each speech day (please print the peer evaluation from the course packet and bring to
class).
! For speakers, on the day you speak, be sure to put the following documents
in your Google drive folder:
o Final preparation outline (and bibliography)
o Speaking outline
o Self Evaluation Form (to be turned in after your speech by midnight
on your speaking day)
