Social Media Analysis Essay Assignment | Get Paper Help

Essay on the effect of social media articles analyzing reader comments. You will choose a story or piece from Youtube, Reddit, Facebook, or an online news source that has at least 100-200 comments. You will categorize the comments and analyze what types of fallacies are made and what readers focus on, using vocabulary terms from Chapters 6-9 in our textbook and additional outside sources. We are doing this assignment because we know that social media such as Facebook is full of stories that distort the truth, hide facts, or outright lie to us, and it can be really hard for some people to know what is true and what is not. It is eye-opening to look at the kinds of comments people make about a story and examine what it reveals about them using critical thinking. Who is commenting on stories and articles, and why? Your first task is to find a story with at least 100 comments that are pertinent to the story (don’t count all the “I’m working from home and earning $6000 a month” or other off-topic comments). In your essay, identify and summarize the story, photo, blog post, etc., using correct formatting (quotations and italics for article/video title and website). Who created this piece? When was it posted? Give some background on the speaker/author/source so the reader knows how credible they are. You will need to come up with categories for the comments. In my opinion, this should be interesting and fun. After you sort and tally them, pull out the best quotes. The body of your essay will discuss these categories and bring in these quotes. Have at least one or two quotes from each of your categories. You’ll need to bring in outside sources that help shed light on what’s going on. These may include fact checking sources like Snopes. You are going to try to determine why people take the stances they do and what those mean. Remember to use signal phrases that format sources correctly. End your essay by looking to the future and/or at society in general. What do you think this story and these comments reveal about our society or at least some segment of it? Your essay will include at least four sources: the original story, supportive analytical sources, and our textbook. You will need to use at least 10 terms and concepts from Chapters 6, 7, 8, and 9. You may need to define the terms, and if so, you will need to include page numbers in parentheses. Remember that your first signal phrase with Diestler will be more detailed and provide authority and background whereas any signal phrases following can just say “Diestler.” The essay can be turned in as an attachment here, but must be submitted in an accepted word processing program (Word or Google docs), in MLA format, with a works cited page. The most difficult aspect of this assignment may be recognizing and resisting your own political biases or values. I suggest you not choose a story where you cannot accept researched facts or opinions that disagree with what you want to believe, rather than risk failing the assignment because your research conflicts with maintaining your opinion. Important Note: The textbook being referred to is Sherry Diestler’s Becoming a Critical Thinker Sixth Edition.
