SOC 211 Quinsigamond Community College A Short History of The Race Concept Questions Watch these video, answer the questions below and write a paragraph or two on your reflections on the video you chose
1.Select one idea of particular interest or relevance to you that you encountered in your reading for that week or a hands-on class experience. Identify the idea or issue for others in your message. What is it? Why did it strike you as interesting or important? Please provide a full and reflective description of the issue or idea. [Present the idea in your own words.]
2. Expand on this issue by considering these two questions:
a. How does this issue apply to your major?
b. What are the implications of this issue for your specific area of interest?
here is an example of guideline answer : ( What I found most interesting is the myth of race video, I found that this video provides an interesting point especially with the issues that we are facing today. Race drives alot of political outcomes even though race is technically not real. How can we PROVE that the race that we identify as IS the race that we are? In 1776 a German scientist who grouped humans into five categorizes of race: Caucasian, Mongolian, Malayan, Ethiopian, and American based off the physical appearance. In America, the different races was a natural right to contradict freedom for all. Whites would not feel as bad for labeling blacks as a different race as they appeared different. Political movements with race and categories brings up arguments about race and what it actually means. The MSNBC anchor who was light skinned but chose to elect as a black woman brought much controversy to the issue of race and who she was or wasn’t. There isnt a chromosome’s that shows exactly what race we are yet; we choose to identify as a certain race. Racial categories are made up and also helps identify were racism has stemmed from.
The issues with race and equality relates tremendously to my major in Criminal Justice/Law Enforcement and more importantly with my line of work. Working for a Police Department right now with the issues with racism and the community is providing me with a great deal of realitive feedback/critique especially with this class. To me (personal opinion) I do not look at skin color as a definition of who someone is/isn’t. I grew up with friends who are like family members who come from a range of ethnic backgrounds such as Asian, African American, Caucasion, etc. We never labeled anyone as such but just as our friends/humans. The difficult part of “labeling” is that is essential for police work however not in the broader sense of the word. For example: when a call comes in for a robbery suspect the dispatcher will ask a series of questions such as what color skin? What kind of clothing? Direction of travel? In a vehicle, or on foot? Based off of those questions that help the police officer narrow down the search, the one of the most important key questions would be the skin color or race).
