Seminole State College Qualitative Analysis of Carbohydrates Lab Report Please complete and upload the following document for the qualitative analysis of carbohydrates lab. Procedure:
A. Benedict’s Test: Benedicts test is used to test for reducing sugars. If the test is positive, then
Benedict’s reagent, initially blue and clear, will turn cloudy and the color will change to a
reddish/orange color.
A series of solutions (water, glucose, fructose, lactose, sucrose, starch, and an unknown) were
tested using the Benedict’s Test. Water was used as a control in the experiment. 10 drops of
each solution were added to labeled test tubes. 2.0 mL of the Benedict’s reagent was then
added to each test tube. The test tubes were heated for 2 to 3 minutes. Figure 1 depicts how
the solutions were prepared:

the Benedicts reagent are heated for two to three minutes.

Record your observations and data in the table on the last page of this document. Be sure to
note whether the solution contained a reducing sugar (R) or a non-reducing sugar/compound
(NR).
B. Seliwanoff’s Test: Seliwanoff’s test is used to specifically determine if an aldehyde or ketone
functional group is present. The Seliwanoff’s reagent, initially clear and colorless, will quickly
form a deep red color if a ketone is present and will slowly turn a light pink color if an aldehyde
is present. Seliwanoff’s test is most reliable for detecting ketones. Certain aldehydes are
unreactive.
The same solutions were tested using the Seliwanoff Reagent. This reagent contains
concentrated HCl. The solutions were heated for about one minute.
Figure 2: When a ketose sugar interacts with the Seliwanoff Reagent, the resulting reaction will
produce a dark red color. The above reaction scheme depicts how the reaction occurs.

C. Iodine Test: Iodine test is used to distinguish complex carbohydrates from simple
carbohydrates. If a complex carbohydrate is present, the clear orange-yellow solution will
change color to either a deep blue-purple or red-brown color.
Ten Drops of each solution was added to a new clean test tube. One drop of Iodine was added
to each solution and the results are below:
