Rhetoric Visual Analysis: The Pursuit of Happiness
This image of Will Smith acting as Chris Gardner by Elite Colum shows a positive and
focused face indicating optimism. Beside his face is a text saying, “Don’t ever let somebody tell
you, you can’t do something. Not even me. Alright?” the rhetorical implication of this image is
optimism in the face of adversity. It is intended to spur positivity in the target audience by
encouraging them that they can achieve anything they set out for regardless of the backdrop. In
the movie, Mr. Gardner overcomes all setbacks to realize his pursuit of happiness. In the same
way, the image is meant to convince the audience that they can do anything. Therefore, no one
has a right to discourage them from pursuing their happiness too.
The image is designed simply to be something that helps set the appropriate mood for the
message to resonate well with the audience. Sophisticated image features are often
misinterpreted and could change the text. The message is written in big capital letters that are in
white against a black background that making them easy to read. The face of Will Smith is
positive, and he looks at a source of light that is raised above him. The bright light is a sign of
optimism.
Observably the background is dark, meaning that he is headed in the right direction. The
text shows optimism in the reader. It makes them realize that they can do anything as long as
they put in the right efforts and strategies. The simple design is essential since it enables the
target audience to determine the message quickly. At the same time, they can easily relate to the
text. The use of simple essential words only helps in driving the message home.
Positivity is the rhetorical appeal in the image. It sets out to encourage the target audience
to be confident in their abilities. As such, the image uses a famous quote from the movies In
RHETORIC VISUAL ANALYSIS
Pursuit of Happiness as the perfect demonstration of the fact that an individual can achieve their
dreams. Therefore, the use of Will Smith’s image is appropriate in confirming them that indeed,
if Mr. Gardner can succeed, they can succeed too.
Through the use of the encouraging quotes, an individual is indeed convinced that
everything is possible regardless of the circumstance they find themselves in. The image is a
perfect demonstration of the idea that using real-life examples to demonstrate concepts makes
them easily absorbed by the intended audience.
This image is aimed at convincing the target audience that they can achieve or become
anything they aspire to be. A combination of the image from the movie and the quote help
underline this — the same applies to the broader context of society. For instance, people are
faced with unimportant challenges daily as they aim to realize their dreams. Thus, the simple
design of the image helps improve their fears. Consequently, they become assured about their
abilities. And they are more confident as a result. Thus the picture was effective in relaying the
message.
