Choose one scene from any of the films we have seen in class.

  • Shall we dance? (Suo Masayuki, 1995)
  • Princess Mononoke (Miyazaki Hayao, 1997)
  • Seven Samurai (Kurosawa Akira, 1954)
  • Harakiri (Kobayashi Masaki, 1962)
  • Fires on the Plain (Ichikawa Kon, 1959)
  • Grave of the Fireflies (Isao Takahata, 1988)
  • Late Spring (OzuYasujiro, 1949)
  • 5cm per second (Makoto Shinkai, 2007)

1) complete “15 points for a scene analysis” (See pdf file)–in bulleted list form

You do not need to do #6 (or #5 if it is a black & white film)

2) Write up your findings in a 2-4 page essay:

  • Introduce the scene and explain why you chose it / why it is an important scene in the film
  • Discuss the overall form of the scene: which of those “15 points” are the most important in this scene? do all of the 15 elements work together to create a consistent mood or a message?
  • Is this scene different from the rest of the film, or is the form consistent throughout the film?

You might also want to discuss the following questions, if you think they are pertinent to your scene analysis.

  • Sound – how does the diagetic or non-diagetic sound add to the scene?
  • Flaws—is there something you think should have been done differently?
  • Is the cinematic form of this scene very different from most other films in this genre? Or is this very standard?
