THE RECOMMENDATION REPORT
Reports are some of the most common documents produced in the workplace. It is essential that you are
familiar with formal reports before you begin your career, and maybe even before you begin your
internships.
Instructions
Choose a local organization (community, campus, or local business) and identify a problem area for a
recommendation report. You will write this report from the perspective of an internal perspective. In
other words, imagine that you work for the company that you are writing this report to, and your boss has
asked you for this report.
The topic you choose should be centered on a specific problem, and the report you develop should help
the organization solve the problem you have identified.
Be sure to include a combination of text and images in your materials.

Management
CEO Activism: You work for a Fortune 500 company (your choice). Your boss has heard a little bit
about CEO Activism and thinks it might be a good move for the company. She has asked you to
research CEO Activism and to recommend 3-4 things she and the company can do to be a part of
CEO Activism. Your recommendations should make sense considering the rhetorical situation,
the kind of company you have chosen, their clients/customers/products, as well as the current
political and social climate. Support your recommendations with 3-4 outside sources—peer
reviewed articles, materials from the SDSU Library’s business-related databases, credible Web
sites, and other reliable sources.

Human Resources
You work for a San Diego-based biotech company. Word around the office is that men are
making significantly more in the same positions as their female counterparts. This poses a
problem for the company’s reputation, employee morale, and human resources. Your boss is
looking for ways to address these issues. Write a recommendation report outlining the issue of
gender wage gap, how it relates to the biotech industry, and recommend at least 3-4 ways that
your company can address these issues. Your recommendations should make sense considering
the rhetorical situation, the kind of company you have chosen, their clients/customers/products,
as well as the current political and social climate. Support your recommendations with 3-4
outside sources—peer reviewed articles, materials from the SDSU Library’s business-related
databases, credible Web sites, and other reliable sources.

Marketing
You work for a local brewery in San Diego. As you know, there are many breweries in the area,
and it has been difficult keeping up with social media trends, blogging, advertising, as well as
customer loyalty in the industry. Your boss is worried that the brewery might be falling to the
back of the pack. He asks you to research customer loyalty as well as social media trends in the
industry and to recommend 3-4 things your brewery can do differently to better market the
business to the target audience. Your recommendations should make sense considering the
rhetorical situation, the kind of company you have chosen, their clients/customers/products, as
well as the current political and social climate. Support your recommendations with 3-4 outside

Your Choice
You may choose to develop your own topic for the recommendation report. However, you must
get your topic approved by me before 4/16 via email. Write me an email with 2-3 paragraphs
explaining the topic, scope, and purpose of your report.
